Wallace B. Smith Honored
The World Church Tangible Love/World Hunger Team recently honored
Wallace B. Smith for 13 years of service and leadership to the world’s hungry.
Smith served as chair of the World Hunger Committee from 1996 to
2007, when the Tangible Love and World Hunger committees merged. During his
tenure, funding for World Hunger ministries and projects surpassed $10 million.
World Conference set up the World Hunger Fund in 1978. The goal
was to “facilitate opportunities for those interested and motivated to
participate in additional ways beyond the fasting discipline and to add these
funds to the support of ministries directed toward problems of world hunger.”
Since 1978 funds have supported about 700 projects in 40 nations.
Also involved in supporting the hungry was Anne Smith, Wallace’s wife. She
served on Bread for the World’s national board from 1980–1984 and preceded
Wallace as chair of the World Hunger Committee from 1984–1994.
“It is always nice to be recognized for doing something for which one has a real
passion anyway,” said Wallace
Members of the team offered thanks for his passion and
leadership.
President Steve Veazey presented him with a letter that in part
said, “You have been an active support for the world’s hungry, not only by your
leadership role, but also by your writings. Your articles in the Herald and in
church bulletins have made a difference in the lives of others. Thank you for
all of your hard work and dedication to World Hunger and Tangible Love.”
