Your Prayers Support French Polynesia Cyclone Recovery
The Austale Islands of French Polynesia were hit hard by
Tropical Cyclone Oli in early February. According to official reports, 4,000
people were evacuated from their homes. Some took refuge in a Community of
Christ church building that is still standing after the storm.
A reconnaissance team has returned from Tubuai and reports widespread
devastation of homes, buildings, and personal property. Rapa, Bora Bora, and
some of the other atolls suffered the same affects. Church members in French
Polynesia, working with the government, continue to collect clothes, food, and
money to send to the people of the Australes to help them. The government is
offering aid to help rebuild homes, where land titles are in place.
Remarkably enough, when aid from the Community of Christ Oblation Fund was
offered, French Polynesia Mission Centre President Mareva Arnaud responded with
gratitude and heartfelt thanks, but indicated it would not be necessary. The
generosity of local members in French Polynesia is providing for the needs at
this time.
A lot of rebuilding over a long period of time will be required, so the people
are still requesting prayer support from their friends around the world.
