God Made . . . Power House Bible School
The Monday probably was one of the hottest days of summer in
Baltimore, Maryland. Despite the heat, Pastor Jeff Anderson and others
distributed postcards to remind neighborhood families that Bible school would
begin that week.
Through prayer Pastor Jeff and the leadership team developed
ideas for the week. We invited President Becky Savage to join us as we explored
how God made, well, everything.
The doors opened Tuesday with staff members and a nurse to
explain to the kids how God made us as individuals and how our bodies work. The
children had their fingerprints taken. They drew pictures of themselves. They
wrote about their favorite things. They spoke with the nurse about proper diet,
exercise, and their organs. And they listened to their hearts beat.
The next day we played games, colored, built with blocks, and
watched a Veggie Tale as they learned how to live with one another and work
together.
Thursday’s theme was “God Made the Neighborhood.” We drew pictures of our row
houses and rode horses in the alley next to the church. Our last day
unofficially was called “God Made Fun.” The kids recapped all the lessons and
then played in an inflatable obstacle course and a giant moon bounce, built with
blocks, played board games, and colored pictures.
In the end we reached more than fifty kids ranging in age from
fourth to fifth grade. Each day the favorite activity changed from the campfire
songs (“Wisconsin Milk” a definite favorite), coloring, building blocks,
horseback riding, and of course the moon bounce.
It has become clear over the years how important the community
is to Power House. The building does not become alive without people using it.
Bible school has been a key in forming relationships with the children and their
families, who entrust us with their kids a few hours each day.
The week was unique in how well the children and staff members
went with the flow and enjoyed the Bible School God Had Made.
