Appalachian Trail Walk for the
Preservation of Kirtland Temple

After six months of treacherous hiking, Mike and Diana Duhl returned to Kirtland, Ohio, and to the support of family and friends. The Duhls hiked hundreds of miles along the Appalachian Trail in hopes of building excitement for the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation and its efforts in preserving Kirtland Temple. As of November 2007, the Duhls received more than $8,500 in donations and pledges.

Mike reflected on his Appalachian Trail experience:

“Well, it is over! Diana had to leave the trail at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, but I was able to continue on until Rutland, Vermont, for a total of 1,668.8 miles. It was a wonderful journey through areas that would never be seen from the typical open road. It was absolutely God’s country at its very best. I have found strength in knowing that my body, mind, and spirit can endure much more than I ever thought possible. I found that the journey is much, much more than just a physical romp through the wilderness. Emotionally, it takes its toll as day after day you wake up and know that you must do so many miles and endure so many challenges to make it happen. Mentally, you have to keep your focus constantly on the trail to make sure of the footing, watching out for snakes, bears, slippery rocks, etc. Physically, it is the most demanding journey you could possibly imagine. Through it all, I have the awareness that I can do just about anything. With patience, perseverance, and God leading the way, all things really are possible.

“I appreciate all of the support of my friends and especially the Community of Christ Heritage Foundation [formerly Restoration Trail Foundation] for heading up this project for Kirtland Temple. This wonderful site is important to us historically, and I pray that all people who read this statement may come and experience how significant this building is to our lives. Please continue to generously support the temple, both through your attendance and donations. Come for a tour. Our staff would be happy to give you the best tour possible. Again, thank you for all of your support!”

Although Mike and Diana Duhl have completed their journey on the Appalachian Trail, donations are still pouring in to the Community of Christ Historic Sites Foundation. For more information about preserving the temple and donating to the Duhl campaign, visit www.kirtlandtemple.org.
