Prayers Requested for Skoor Family

The Community of Christ is deeply saddened by the tragedy affecting the Skoor family of the Renton, Washington, congregation. We will continue to uphold all those affected by these events.

On Monday evening, October 23, John Skoor was walking on the beach in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with his wife, Susan Skoor, and his sister, Debbie Fenske. Although they were walking some distance from the water, they were unexpectedly struck by a rogue wave associated with Tropical Storm Paul.

John’s sister was injured in the incident and is recovering. Susan was also struck by the wave, but managed to get back to shore with only minor injuries. Tragically, John was carried out to sea and is feared to have drowned. In the wake of such a terrible accident, Susan has requested the prayerful support of church members and friends.

A Profile of John Skoor’s Life

John was born December 14, 1939, in Mt. Vernon, Washington. He graduated from Cleveland High School in Seattle and attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, for his undergraduate work. He also held a Masters in Fine Arts from Central Washington University. His major training was in drawing and painting, with a focus on staff development.

He served the Community of Christ as a lay minister and active member of the Rainier Valley and Renton, Washington, Community of Christ congregations. His wife, Susan, is a member of the church’s Council of Twelve Apostles, the leading missionary quorum of Community of Christ, headquartered in Independence, Missouri. She has administrative leadership for the Western USA Mission Field. John and Susan’s home is in Renton, Washington.

John and Susan are the parents of two married daughters: Marie, married to Jonathan Shipley; and Christie, married to Christian Skoorsmith; and are grandparents to Marie and Jonathan’s daughter, Grace. John’s extended family includes many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Seattle area. His mother, Marie, and sister, Patricia, live in Auburn. His brother Bob, and sister, Debbie, reside in Moses Lake.

For many years John had a home studio in Seattle, Washington. Before retiring, he served as adjunct faculty teaching art at Seattle Pacific University and Central Washington University. He also served as faculty at Highline Community College and Green River Community College. Most recently he taught for Seniors Making Art, a nonprofit organization dedicated to “enhancing lives through creative expression.”

Though his life’s work was in the arts, his true love was his family and friends. His enthusiasm and positive energy was felt by all who knew him.
