Grand Cayman Mission House Reconstructed
The
Mission House in South Sound, Grand Cayman, was so severely damaged by
Hurricane Ivan in September 2004 that the building needed to be completely
replaced. Oblation aid in the amount of $12,600US from the $950,000 donated
specifically for hurricane relief was granted to help complete the project.
Assistant to the apostle and bishop for the Latin America/Caribbean mission
field Johnny Stabno reported, “The Mission House has been used as a parsonage
for ministers living there and serves as a central meeting and activity place
for the congregation.” The rebuilt and improved Mission House will support
ministries for the congregation in Georgetown and serve as a training facility
for the Caribbean Mission Center.
Rebuilding has been a challenge in the aftermath of the hurricane due to
the permit application process and material shortages. The project involved
the work of contractors as well as volunteers, with completion expected by the
end of June.
Total reconstruction cost was estimated at just over $166,000US. Funding
came from insurance, an International Capital grant (funded by contributors),
and individual contributions. The Oblation hurricane relief grant sent in May
secured completion of the building.
The generosity of contributors is deeply appreciated. Contributions to
Oblation and other funds that make it possible to impact lives around the
world can be made online with a credit or debit card at
www.CofChrist.org/worldministries/ and through your Mission Tithes
offering envelopes.
