Herald Awards
The Herald was a winner at the academy awards of church
publications, the annual convention of Associated Church Press held April 29,
2003 in Indianapolis. Herald was in competition with 175 member
publications, including Christian Century, Alive Now, Sojourners, and The
Other Side, which have combined circulations of more than 28 million.
Herald editor, Jim Hannah, accepted three awards on behalf of the
editorial/graphic team whose efforts to achieve excellence were recognized.
An Award of Excellence (first place award) among seven entries in
Best Redesign. The judge's remarks published in the ACP newsletter special
awards issue said:
Award of Excellence: Herald, edited by Jim Hannah and designed by
Jack Martin. "Great use of white space. The new leading of the type makes
the pages much more readable and inviting. The new table of contents and
titling also enhance the open feeling of the pages." Further comments on
the judge's evaluation sheet said, "Great redesign. From cover to
contents to art and type the whole magazine is much more inviting."
Honorable Mention (third place award) among 46 entries in Personal
Experience, First-person Account for the article "Hope Yet Dawns,"
by Ted Kettlewell, September 2002, which reflected on the one-year anniversary
of the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Center, written by a Community of
Christ member on the first FEMA team deployment.
Honorable Mention (third place award) among seven entries for
Magazine Design, Entire Issue, one- or two-color for the June 2002 issue on
the 2002 World Conference.
Particular appreciation to Jack Martin for the award of excellence in
overall magazine redesign, Julie Heide for honorable mention on her World
Conference layout, Jim Hannah for his editorial touch and vision, and the
whole Herald editorial and graphic team, which includes Jim, Jack,
Julie, Jeff Piedimonte, Kendra Friend, Cheryll Peterman, Mary Kohlman, Rich
Brown, Patty Wilson, and Susan Naylor. Thank you and congratulations.
