Dear Pastor:

Join in the Advent worship December 11 at the Temple in Independence, Missouri, or through the live webcast at www.CofChrist.org at 7:00 p.m. central time. The First Presidency will share in scripture readings and the Spire Symphonic Chorus and the Emporia State University Faculty Brass and Percussion Ensemble, with conductor Ben Spalding, will be featured.

Incarnation… Celebrate the birth of Christ with a collection of inspiring Herald stories. With the birth of Christ, humankind received the gift of the Lord in human form. Two millennia later, he remains with us…in us. We see his face in our neighbors, strangers, loved ones. We see him wherever we see somebody bringing hope, giving ministry, offering love. We hope you will see him, too, in the stories and testimonies we present. To subscribe to the Herald, visit www.HeraldHouse.org or contact subscriptions@HeraldHouse.org or 1-800-767-8181.

A $10,000 relief grant is helping Abolish Poverty, End Suffering in northeastern El Salvador. Several days of torrential rains across Central America in mid-October led to flooding and mudslides. Lives, crops, homes, and infrastructure have been lost. You can give to Abolish Poverty, End Suffering through mission tithes envelopes in a congregation and at www.CofChrist.org/give/contribute. Because of your ongoing contributions to this mission initiative, you join Community of Christ in responding in times of crisis as a worldwide church. Read more at www.CofChrist.org/news/2011/oct/26oct2011-elSalvador.asp.

Share your congregation’s Advent story. As you journey through Advent, you’re going to take photos. We’d love to share some through the Herald. Please send photos (one megabyte or larger) with captions that tell us where you took them, what is happening, and who is pictured. Photos may be sent to Herald@CofChrist.org or to Herald, 1001 W. Walnut St., Independence, MO 64050-3562 USA.

Thank you for your generous gifts that continue to move Christ’s mission forward. Since introducing mission initiatives in April 2011, you have responded by increasing your tithes. On June 30, the end of our fiscal year, tithing had increased by 8 percent. We are blessed by the assurance that God is with us on this journey as we embrace the call to make Christ’s mission our mission. Your prayerful consideration of your commitment to World Mission Tithes next year is appreciated. Find the right option to support mission at www.CofChrist.org/give. May the peace of Jesus Christ bless each of you this holiday season and throughout the new year.

Children’s Mission Tithes offering envelopes will be mailed to all 8- to 12-year-old members and friends in the USA, beginning in January. Approximately 1,800 children currently receive envelopes. The World Church will provide the additional 4,500 envelopes to help engage this new generation of disciples at no cost to congregations or mission centers. For children younger than 8 who wish to receive envelopes, please contact the congregational financial officer. We want to involve even our youngest members in moving the whole mission of Jesus Christ forward through the mission initiatives and the principles of A Disciple’s Generous Response.

The Hymnal Team and volunteers will offer Joyful Noise Workshops over the next two years in preparation for the next hymnal’s release in 2013. Musicians, song leaders, instrumentalists, and worship leaders will explore the diverse musical styles, languages, guitar chords, and arrangements in the hymnal. Familiarize yourself with the theological content, scriptural references, musical styles, worship-planning skills, topical indexes, and more. Simultaneous sessions will be offered, tailored to the skill sets of attendees. Come to one workshop or many to prepare for the new book.

The first workshop will be February 11–12, 2012, at the Temple in Independence, Missouri, and is free of charge. For more information, contact Pam Robison at ext. 2324 or probison@CofChrist.org. Other Joyful Noise Workshops are being scheduled across North America. Get more details and watch for announcements of more dates and locations at www.CofChrist.org/hymnal/workshops.asp.

Register now for Ministerial Education and Discipleship Studies (MEADS). February 6–10 courses will be Public Ministry with Robin Linkhart, 8:30 a.m.–noon; and Hebrew Scriptures with Wim van Klinken 1:30–5:00 p.m. Cost is $88 per class, $175 for both, or $50 to audit one course. Pursue Peace on Earth will also be offered from 1:30–5:00 p.m. with Brad Martell for $25. This course is for Temple School credit and does not go toward MEADS certification. Go to www.CofChrist.org/meads/schedule.asp for more information and course syllabi. To register, contact Michelle Booth at ext. 1459 or mbooth@CofChrist.org.

Health briefs are available from Health Ministries Association to help meet the mental, physical, and spiritual needs of your congregation. “Grief and the Holidays” has been revised to assist those who are grieving or dealing with a loss. Listed are tangible ways we can help in addition to the prayers of support we can provide during the holiday season.

For congregations looking for adult Sunday school class topics, check out health briefs to be used the five Sundays of January when people often focus on New Year’s resolutions, assessing one’s life, and making positive changes. All health briefs can be downloaded at www.CHM.HMACofChrist.org.

Catch the December generosity stories at www.CofChrist.org/generositystories. PowerPoint presentations are included with each week’s story except the December 11 contribution update.

The 2012 Peace Colloquy will be held October 26–28. This new date resolves a conflict with dates for Graceland University’s recently announced Homecoming. Altering the Peace Colloquy dates will allow for more participation by students and the many people who have ties to both Graceland and the Colloquy. We look forward to sharing together in the Colloquy as we continue to Pursue Peace on Earth.

Witness the Word will be produced using a new DVD product that aligns more closely with our enduring principle, Sacredness of Creation. Beginning with this January’s Witness the Word, Community of Christ will use the new Flex DVD. Several features make it a better choice for distributing video content. It is 100-percent recyclable and 100-percent flexible, which means no breakage. Also, it creates a 50-percent smaller carbon footprint and is 50-percent lighter, which means reduced shipping costs. You can also see Witness the Word sermons at www.CofChrist.org/worship/sermons.asp.

Are you involved in, or interested in being involved, in prison ministries? A Community of Christ prison ministry group based in Kansas City, Missouri, wants to network with and assist others in prison ministry across the USA. Please send your name, address, e-mail, and the congregation you attend to prisonministry@live.com if you are interested. If you know an incarcerated person who might want some kind of Community of Christ contact, please send their information to prisonministry@live.com.
