Unity in Diversity

The church embraces diversity and unity through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Unity in Diversity

1 Corinthians 12:4-13; Doctrine and Covenants 164:5
“For Everyone Born” CCS 285

Read or paraphrase 1 Corinthians 12:4–13, adapted: “All gifts are given by the Holy Spirit. All parts of the body work together and none is greater than the other” and Doctrine and Covenants 164:5, adapted: “When you are truly baptized into Christ you become part of a new creation. By taking on the life and mind of Christ, you see yourselves and others from a changed perspective. Through the gospel of Christ a new community of tolerance, reconciliation, unity in diversity, and love is being born as a visible sign of the coming reign of God.” Discuss:

  1. How do these two scriptures help us understand how to create a community? Why do the body parts have to work together?
  2. How are the different parts of the body like different people in God’s church? What does each do?
  3. If you were a hand, head, heart, eyes, legs, feet, arms, heart, or stomach—which body part would you most relate to?
  4. What is your best skill? What body parts are required?

Look for Diversity

Ephesians 4:1-6
“We Need Each Other’s Voice to Sing” CCS 324

Create an intergenerational “search committee” to look for diversity. How can the congregation become more diverse or become more accepting of diversity? Is there general unity or are there disagreeing factions? Do the various age groups differ in what they expect, respect, and reject? How can being united in Christ blur distinctions that set us apart and clarify that which brings us together?
