Generosity Cycle Disciples’ Generous Response

Generosity Cycle Disciples’ Generous Response

The Generosity Cycle spans six weeks typically leading into the season of Advent.  The Disciples’ Generous Response moments during these six weeks are focused on the Invite, Discover, Respond and Reflect phases of the Generosity Cycle.

Week One - introduces the Generosity Cycle and invites people to participate

Weeks Two through Four - focus on the Discover phase and explore how gratitude shapes our generous response

Week Five – asks members to consider a commitment to sharing their time, talent, treasure and testimony as the Disciples’ Generous Response focuses on the Respond phase.

Week Six – invites members into a year-long reflection period as the church heads into the season of Advent.

If possible, invite one individual in the congregation with a passion for generosity to prepare and present the Disciples’ Generous Response for these six weeks.

Ideas for this year’s Generosity Cycle DGR moments can be found in the worship resources section of the website.

Invitation

As a church, we have various seasons we celebrate.  These seasons cause us to focus our gaze in a certain direction and spend time in meaningful reflection and preparation.

We are entering a season of generosity by focusing on the four phases of the Generosity Cycle:  Invite, Discover, Respond and Reflect. This is a period set aside to recognize the grace of God and to discover a deeper joy in discipleship through intentional whole-life stewardship.

Today we focus on our Invitation to take time to recognize God’s generosity — to intentionally stop and pause. Every moment is filled with God’s generosity, if only we remember to stop and open ourselves to receiving these gifts. Every action and decision we make starts from a place of recognizing how abundantly blessed we are. We become whole only when we receive God’s gifts and understand that God gives freely — no strings attached.

This morning as you share your mission tithes, or if you give regularly through eTithing, use this time to reflect on what God gives and why God gives.

Collectively and individually, you are loved with an everlasting love that delights in each faithful step taken. God yearns to draw you close so that wounds may be healed, emptiness filled, and hope strengthened. Come before your Eternal Creator with open minds and hearts … be vulnerable to divine grace.

—Doctrine and Covenants 163:10, adapted

When we understand God’s love and grace are given freely, we respond out of gratitude. Our offerings are more than meeting budgets or funds for mission. Through our offerings we tangibly express our gratitude to God, giver of all.

Discovering

Today we continue our focus on the Generosity Cycle, a period set aside to recognize the grace of God and to discover a deeper joy in discipleship through intentional whole-life stewardship.

Today we focus on Discovering. Our lives can become so familiar to us that we stop noticing the generosity of God that surrounds us. We take so much for granted. Now is an opportunity to look and see the many ways we are blessed every day.

God’s generosity is revealed in beautiful sunrises, waves on the shore, the face of a newborn child, music that touches our soul. But it’s also revealed in things as simple as the chairs we sit on or the clothes we wear. Discover what you’ve already received, where it came from and how you can use it for God’s purposes and vision for creation.

This morning as you share your mission tithes, or if you give regularly through eTithing, take time to look around and find God’s gifts. How is God blessing you in this moment?

Listen to the testimonies of those responding generously. Follow your soul’s yearning to come home to God’s grace and generosity. Let gratitude show you the way.

—Doctrine and Covenants 165:2b

Responding

Today we continue our focus on the Generosity Cycle, a period set aside to recognize the grace of God and to discover a deeper joy in discipleship through intentional whole-life stewardship.

Today we focus on Responding. This is an opportunity to examine some of the foundations on which our lives rest and look at priorities and assumptions. It’s a chance to explore how gratitude and generosity might be the perfect antidotes to the anxieties and worries created by a world that drives us to always think we’ll never have enough.

God has abundantly blessed us. Our response to this generosity matters, not only in what we give but in what we do with what we keep. Every action and decision we make reflects our heart. When we respond generously, it is a symbol of our witness to Christ’s presence in our lives.

Being a Christian is more than holding a list of right ideas; it is about radical obedience to Jesus in very part of life. God’s boundless love set us free for lives of responsible stewardship in which we generously offer our lives in service to God’s reign.

—Sharing in Community of Christ, 4th Edition

This morning as you share your mission tithes, or if you give regularly through eTithing, take a moment to think about how your generous response reflects what you believe. Do your actions and behaviors display your belief in a generous and loving God?

When we understand God’s love and grace are given freely, we respond out of gratitude. Our offerings are more than meeting budgets or funds for mission. Through our offerings we tangibly express our gratitude to God, giver of all.

Reflection

Play the Generosity Cycle video.

Today we continue to focus on the Generosity Cycle, a period set aside to recognize the grace of God and to discover a deeper joy in discipleship through intentional whole-life stewardship.

Today we focus on Reflection. In every season, we have the opportunity to serve God and others by living generous lives. Living generously is not a one-time event. The decision to embrace a generous worldview is a choice we must make every day. Each moment of our lives gives us an opportunity to reconnect with God’s blessings and think about our personal response to that generosity.

Reflection is an ongoing discipline. It’s a spiritual practice that causes us to take time to look back and review, to assess and to reflect on what actions we have taken toward living a transformed and generous life. Every day we should ask ourselves “How would living more like Jesus affect the decisions I need to make right now?”

As we head into the season of Advent, and then into a new year, let us make room in our hearts and schedules to receive and reflect on the amazing gift of God’s son.

This morning as you share your mission tithes, or if you give regularly through eTithing, take a moment to reflect on your recent decisions or those you still need to make. Have or will those decisions bring you closer to or drive you further from Christ — the one we claim to follow?
