Jesus calls us to follow. We are learning to follow Jesus, our teacher, friend, and Savior. We are at different places on our journey, and each of us has different needs and strengths. During this worship service we will take a closer look at ourselves as disciples of Christ. What areas in our walk need stretching or exploring? As a congregation we are on the road together and can learn and help each other. We will begin by taking some time this morning to use a tool provided by the Disciple Formation ministries that will help us see individually and then as a congregation which areas we wish to explore as we grow our discipleship.
Call to Confession
We have come here today disjointed, hurried, and inadequately prepared.
We have allowed our own preferences and priorities to stand as barriers between ourselves and others.
We have hidden from our divinely bestowed gifts and responded reluctantly to God’s call.
Let us offer to God in silence our prayers for forgiveness with complete assurance that, in our unworthiness, we each are received as persons of tremendous worth.

Scripture Reading Assign two readers on opposite sides of the room to read.
Reader 1: “As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea-for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” –Mark 1:16,17 NRSV
Reader 2: “Then he said to them all, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”-Luke 9:23

If possible, engage two teenagers to play “Follow the Leader” with smaller children around the sanctuary (about three minutes). Have the leaders use easy to follow commands as well as those that are difficult to follow. Then gather together and talk to all about what needs to happen when a person follows another-sincere observation-to study the leader’s movement and then practice. If the leader’s movements are difficult, the followers may need to gain strength before they are able to perform the same skill. Discuss how following Jesus has similar challenges, but with practice, we can become quite proficient and even lead other.
Play the “Practices of Discipleship” video (three minutes) after downloading from the Discipleship Formation Guide at www.cofchrist.org. Immediately after showing the video, distribute age-appropriate copies of the Disciple Profile (for children, youth, and adults), and pens or pencils if needed.
Or consider two short testimonies of commitment
First, ensure that each participant has an age appropriate Disciple Profile (children, youth, or adult). Invite the congregation to fill out the Profile and explain that it has worth for them in their personal journey as well as the corporate journey. Profiles will guide the leadership to needed direction for the congregation. Ask participants to place finished Profiles in the offertory basket or in a basket at the end of the service placed near the exit. Allow five minutes, and provide music-without words, to allow people to get a good start on the Profile.
