Call to Prayer

Lighting of Candle

In the name of Jesus Christ, welcome to this sacred space that “stand(s) as a towering symbol of a people who knew injustice and strife on the frontier and who now seek the peace of Jesus Christ throughout the world.”

—Doctrine and Covenants 161:2b

Today in our prayers we remember the people of Kuwait, located in Western Asia on the Persian Gulf. Kuwait shares borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It has a cultural heritage dating back to antiquity.

Scripture Reading—Jeremiah 31:33-34 NRSV

But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Prayer for Peace

Helen Lents

Creator God, we approach you in deep humility as our eyes and our hearts are opened to awareness of the generosity of your Spirit’s blessings to us. We also sense the need of forgiveness for our lack of vision at times in recognizing our stewardship over these blessings. Our physical world is a place of beauty, but we often leave it scarred and ugly in our misuse and neglect of its wonderful resources. Our relationships so precious and important to our wellbeing are sometimes neglected in our busy-ness and result in significant losses to your children.

In the storms and uncertainties of our lives we call forth strength from the steadfastness of your love and concern for your world. We know you are there for us in our darkest hours. Your Spirit helps us find a clearer vision of who we are and may become.

We grow in our understanding of the call to create safe havens for the troubled areas of the word—and we feel deep within our souls the longing for relationships of caring support and nurture.

Today we think particularly of the children—the vulnerable little ones who are victimized by wars, famine, self-serving governments and abuse by those whom they should be able to trust and rely on for protection and sustenance. Our prayer is that clouded vision which allows these tragedies to happen may be made clear—that the goodness inherent in your created world may break forth with a new song of hope, of peace and love—that shalom may prevail and all the world may one day rejoice.

Bless us, our Creator and our God, as we offer ourselves as participants in creating such a world, we pray in the name of the Great Peacemaker. Amen.

Today’s hymn is 314 in Community of Christ Sings, “When the Darkness Overwhelms Us.” Sing or silently reflect on the meaning of the text as it is sung. Hymn number 314.

Prayers of the People

As we enter a time of guided prayer, meditation, and musical reflection, you are invited to offer silent prayers or meditate during the moments of quiet. The Prayers of the People begin with individuals and groups, then move out from this Temple of peace to include the human family and the planet.

Allow yourself to come reverently into the presence of the Divine and please join with me in prayer. Transformative encounters await you here with the Eternal Creator and Reconciler.

Creator God, cleanse our hearts. Accept the confession of our flaws and failures, and make us whole. Transform us, O God, into the persons of peace and grace you created us to be.

Redeeming God, bring to our awareness those persons and relationships that are broken, and make us conscious of the need for reconciliation and forgiveness. Transform us for relationships of wholeness once again.

Saving God, allow us to feel your love and concern for your children in communities around the world, far and near. We remember all nations, including Kuwait, the country we pray for today. May we weep with your tears and act with compassion to heal those who are suffering.

God of all creation, stir within us a deep connection with everything you have created; make us aware of the sacred nature of all that surrounds us and lead us into deep reverence that cultivates nurturing actions.

May these prayers of concern, compassion, and transformation for ourselves, others, all people, and the Earth lead us into a world shaped by your unconditional love, O God. Amen.
