Accepting the Cross
Good Friday Service

Worship setting: The cross should be draped in black. Candles should be lit around the cross and all around the room. Jesus’ robe could be at the foot of the cross. It should be quite dark in the sanctuary. Make sure readers and participants have candles, small penlights, or another source of minimal light.

Reader 1:

Hail, king of the Jews.

Reader 2:

And they spat on him, struck him again and again.
They mocked him and led him away to be crucified.

Reader 1:

This is the king of the Jews. Save yourself.
Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God.

Reader 2:

He saved others, but he can’t save himself.

Reader 1:

He trusts God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him.

Reader 2:

Come down from the cross and we will believe you.
