Let God Find You
A Service of Baptism

Praise Songs

“Lord, I Lift Your Name on High” NS 33
“Awesome God” NS 4
“For All the Saints” HS 480

Welcome

*Hymn: “My Lord, I Know That All My Life” HS 457

*Invocation

Lord of our lives, loves, and desires, please help us to center our hearts on you today. Fill us with the joy you have seeing another one of your children come home. Invite us into your sanctuary and lead our praise. May your kingdom come and your will be done in us as we worship this day. Help us to love you more dearly. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Scripture Meditation: Matthew 3:13–17

Reading

Get Lost, Be Found

Travel the known path, pilgrim;

however, if you do,

you will see nothing new

you will see nothing at all—

except your small

destination.

Journey the mysterious

unknown, curious

you’ll be led to pause

by the journey itself as it draws

you in.

There you will know, not where

you go, but how you flow

from one moment to another.

This, I vow, will allow

you the time

to ponder the pond, spy the sparrow,

heed the road—so wide, so narrow.

In the here and the now, in the near and the far,

get lost, then be found where you are.

—Linda Mountenay

*Hymn: “I Sought the Lord” HS 213

Charge to the Candidate(s)

The charge should refer to God’s unrelenting grace and the preciousness of each and every person in God’s sight. No matter what a person has done in the past or what choices they have made, God always loves, forgives, and receives each one. Baptism is the symbol of God’s never-ending claim on each person.

Congregation Prayer and Share

Congregation members will be asked to offer prayers for the candidate. They might ask that the candidate learn to use their weakness for God’s glory through the gift of repentance. The sharing could include brief statements of support for the candidate.

*Hymn: “Lord Jesus, of You I Will Sing” SP 31
OR “Companions on the Journey” NS 7

Responsive Scripture Reading

Leader: Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine.

People: And they that will hear my voice shall be my sheep; and they shall you receive into the church; and they will I also receive.

Leader: For, behold, this is my church: whoever is baptized shall be baptized unto repentance.

Males: For it is I that takes upon me the sins of the world;

Females: …for it is I that created them;

Leader: …and it is I that grants unto him that believes in the end, a place at my right hand.

People: For behold, in my name are they called.

—Mosiah 11:125–132 adapted

*Sending Forth

You are my friends if you do what I command you…. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last.—John 15:14, 16
