Knowing Christ as Savior

Congregational Introit: "I Love You, Lord" (sing twice)

Call to Worship

NS 18

Leader:

It is time to be a gift for the world.

People:

It is time to be a gift, acceptable and blessed.

Leader:

As keepers of the covenant, we are called to be God’s people in this time and place, to sow the seeds of faith in a fearful world.

People:

As keepers of the covenant we are called to be an expression of God’s creative power, to declare the word of hope in a despairing world.

Leader:

As keepers of the covenant we are called to be the presence of the Living Christ, to bring the gift of joy to an expectant world.

People:

It is time to be a gift for the world. It is time to be a gift, acceptable and blessed.

—by Mary Jowett, Prayers and Readings for Worship, Vol. 1, edited by Judy Judd, (Herald House, 1987), 21.

A Statement of Faith:

(Read by ordinand or divide into a multivoice reading if there are more ordinands)

I believe that God, the Creator and Lord of this universe,
knows and cares for every living person.
I believe that God is revealed to us today
through the scriptures,
through our Savior, Jesus Christ,
and through the lives of holy people.
I believe that God has a mission for me,
to minister in God’s name and
to share God’s love and blessings with all people
of my own community and of every race and nation.
I believe that as I give to God my life,
my love, my offerings, and my talents,
God will bring rich meaning into my life
and will use me to help others to a better life in Christ.

Blessed to Be a Blessing

Statement of Challenge

In the form of a challenge to both the ordinand and the congregation, expand on the concept of the privilege we have as Christians to be a gift to the world, to make a difference and bring God’s love to a broken world.

Serving in His Stead

Congregational Hymn: "Make Me a Servant"

 NS 35

Offertory

Statements of Commitment

As the ordinand has made a specific commitment to service today, so may we offer our lives in a specific way as we go forth. Make a one or two sentence statement that reflects the response you will make this week to be a gift to the world.

*Congregational Hymn: "Make Us, O God, a Church that Shares"

HS 484

*Sending Forth: John 15:12–17 NRSV

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commandments so that you may love one another. Go with God.
