Thoughts for Palm Sunday
Why did Jesus choose to ride to town on a donkey?
Was it because the custom in that land was for a king who came in
peace to ride on a donkey?
If he were coming for war, he would ride a horse, or a horse and
chariot.
No Roman conqueror ever came riding on a donkey.
Another worldwide custom, even to this day, is
preparing the road and offering flowers. When we were living in
Taiwan, John Foster Dulles came as a representative from the president
of the United States on a state visit to Chiang Kai Shek, president of
Taiwan. In preparation for his visit, the road from the airport was
paved, and new plantings were placed along the roadway. School was
dismissed for the day and schoolchildren waving flags, singing welcome
songs, and holding bouquets of flowers lined the roadway. It was a day
of celebration.
On this special day in the Christian calendar we
celebrate:
The King of Kings is coming!

Is This How We Welcome HIM?
Maxine Wight
King comes down the aisle toward platform wearing a bedraggled
robe. Citizen dressed in casual dress and chewing gum greets the King.
Well, howdy, King! Shore glad ya come!
Sorry about that road ya
come in on yestidday…
Been meanin’ ta fix it but never got around to it.
Shore had a lot of potholes…but ah guess it didn’t bother ya none.
Heerd ya had quite a prade yestiddy…flag wavin’ ’n
everythin’…
Ah wuz meanin’ ta go,
but thet store had plumb run outa flags when ah went there.
So me an’ the kids jes went fishin’ down on Galilee Lake…
Didn’t ketch much tho’.
Hey…thet ole shack they done give you ta live in ain’t much
is it?
Well, I reckon y’all kin fix it up as ya go along…
y’all bein’ a
CARPENTER by trade..
I could give you some pointers…got my house fixed up jes’ fine.
I hear y’all plannin’ ta pass out a few blessin’s for the
folks here…
Shore hope y’all will
pour out a few for me an’ my family…
My kids is pretty sickly…don’t eat right, I guess.
We’ll be needin’ some blessin’s there, I reckon.
An’ I’ve been wanting a new TV
…I’ll think of some
more stuff an’ let you know.
Well, I’ll be goin’, got things to do.
Oh, by the way…don’t pay no attention ta thet family livin’
down in the holler…
They’re cousins of
mine, but I don’t associate with them none…
…bunch of no-good ignorant folks that don’t know nothin’ about kingly
ways.
I jes turn my back when I see’em comin’.
King smiles and turns and starts down toward the cousin’s
house.
HEY, KING, WHERE Y’ALL GOIN’? HEY! THAT’S WHERE MY COUSIN
LIVES!
MY LOW DOWN COUSIN…REMEMBER?
Looks at congregation and shrugs.
CAN YA FIGURE THAT ONE OUT? AH JES’ DON’T GIT IT!
THAT KING DON’T SEEM TA CARE WHO HE ASSOCIATES WITH!
