Call To Worship: Mark 11:1–10, adapted

Reader 1: As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here."

Reader 2: If anyone asks you, "Why are you doing this?" tell them, "The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly."

Reader 3:  They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway just as Jesus had told them. As they untied the colt, its owners asked them, "What are you doing untying that colt?"

Reader 1: They answered as Jesus had told them. "The Lord needs it."

Reader 2:  When they brought the colt to Jesus, they threw their cloaks on it and Jesus sat on it.

Reader 3: As Jesus went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

Reader 2: Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

Reader 1:  Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted.

Readers 1, 2, and 3: "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
"Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David.
"Hosanna in the highest!"

The last line should be read in loud voices as the crowd welcoming Jesus would have done.

Responsive Reading

Jesus: Let us go up to Jerusalem.

People: Let us spread our coats in the road for the conquering king.

Jesus:  But you do not understand, I must suffer and be killed in Jerusalem.

People:  Let us spread palm branches in the way.

Jesus: Please listen, I will be betrayed into human hands and they will kill me.

People:  Hosanna to the Son of David!

Jesus: I have tried to tell you, I will be handed over to the Romans to be beaten and crucified.

People: Blessed is Jesus who comes in the name of God to conquer Rome.

Jesus:  How often I would have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her chicks to protect them.

People:  Hosanna to the conquering king!

Jesus: You have not understood. This is not a day of triumph; it is instead another step on my journey to the cross.

Sermon

Jesus’ disciples really did not understand his message and why he came. Do we really understand the message of Jesus for our day and time?

Offertory Statement and Prayer

We impart to you, Lord, of our abundant gifts. Guide us in our choices as we strive to follow and share with those of less abundance. May our gifts be of comfort to the poor and needy, the sick and afflicted. We pray, Lord, we will have the sight to see and the wisdom to answer the needs of your people. Amen.
