"I Have Called You by Your Name" – Annotations

  1. Welcome and invite all to worship. Also articulate the call of each person to discipleship, reminding us that we are all called to offer ministry in the congregation and the community.

  2. Share the story of young Samuel found in I Samuel, chapters1-3. Use a children’s Bible for a condensed version of the story. Samuel (and Hannah) answered God’s call. What are some of the ways we hear God’s call today? How do we answer God’s call?

  3. Invite a person who holds the same priesthood office as the one being ordained to share a testimony about the ministry of this office of the priesthood. How has the Spirit blessed his/her ministry? How has priesthood responsibility caused him/her to grow?

  4. This is the sermon. Include a discussion of the particular priesthood office of the ordinand and the needs it fulfills within the body of Christ. Challenge the ordinand to offer his/her gifts in ministry. Challenge the congregation to offer support and help to the ordinand. Affirm God’s call to people of every era to be in the midst of the people as ministers.

  5. Ask the ordinand to share his/her testimony of accepting this call and his/her hopes for his/her ministry.

  6. If desired, the presider may announce the participants’ names prior to the ordination.

  7. Invite a representative of the congregation to affirm the call and response of the person just ordained, offering the help and support of the congregation in this new ministry.

  8. If possible, form a circle around the perimeter of the sanctuary before this prayer is offered.
