Lighting of the Advent Candles/Season of Prayer and Testimony

Reader 1:

Isaiah 9:2 Light candle.

 Presider:

Christ is our hope and our light in the darkness! Please join me now, as I pray for hope in the world. Offer brief prayer.

Reader 2:

Isaiah 9:6 Light candle.

Presider:

Christ is our peace! Are there two people who would offer prayers for peace?
Two brief prayers from the congregation

Reader 3:

Isaiah 44:22 Light candle.

Presider:

Christ is our salvation, God’s love and made visible! I have asked three people to share statements concerning their need for Christ’s love in their lives.

Reader 4:

Isaiah 44:23 Light candle.

Presider:

Christ is our joy and our redemption! Join with me in a corporate prayer by saying aloud together one word or phrase describing what you are thankful for. I will begin the prayer and when I nod we will all insert our word or phrase. "O God, we bring you praise and thanks for...."

Reader 5:

Christmas has come. It has really come again! As we light the Christ candle which stands in the center of our wreath, we know Christ makes possible our hope, our peace, our joy, and our life.
We pray,
Come, Lord Jesus!

Presider:

Christ is the Word of God revealed! I have asked a pre-designated person to offer a prayer thanking God for the gift of Jesus Christ.

Lower the lights as much as possible for the singing of the next hymn. Keep enough light for people to be able to see the words.

Candle Lighting

As music is sung, have the congregation come forward for each person to light a candle from the flame of the Christ candle and then form a circle around the perimeter of the sanctuary. Use care with the candle flames and hot wax.

Benediction

Offer as the congregation stands in the circle with lit candles.
