By sending leaders to
theological seminaries, complemented by ministerial Education and
Discipleship Studies (MEADS) training, mission centers in Africa are
becoming equipped with competent, knowledgeable ministers. MEADS
classes in August in Nairobi, Kenya, and Lusaka, Zambia, attracted
more than 80 African leaders. |
Disciple-Making
in
Africa and Haiti
The mission and message of the Community of Christ is attracting great numbers
of people to become members in Africa and Haiti. “The challenge is,” said Bunda
Chibwe, Africa-Haiti Mission Field apostle, “they are coming from different
backgrounds and other Christian churches.” A major emphasis in this mission
field is focusing on disciple-making.
Bunda expressed the importance of helping new members understand “what it means
to assist God in creating communities of joy, hope, love, and peace…. We want
people who are becoming members to understand that as disciples of Christ we
must continue to learn and to teach.”
“In Africa and Haiti we see a great and marvelous work ahead of us,” said Bunda.
“The field is white and ready! There are so many opportunities for planting
churches in several countries and languages.” Additional money would make it
possible to expand the church into more than five African countries where the
church has serious contacts. For example, more than 110 people are meeting in
Angola and inviting leaders to come.
World Ministries dollars help support training for new members as well as for
leaders. The first-ever MEADS program for Haiti is also being planned. If more
funding became available, Africa, where there is currently one MEADS session
each year, could readily fill two annual MEADS sessions.
