Scripture
O Lord, my heart is not lifted up, my eyes are not raised too
high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous
for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child
with its mother; my soul within me is like a weaned child.—Psalm
131:1–2, adapted
Reflection
This is called the Psalm of Quiet Trust. Meister Eckhart said:
You can never trust God too much.
Why is it that people do not bear fruit?
It is because they have not trust either in God or in themselves.
What areas of your life are you reluctant to trust to God? When have
you felt God “calm and quiet” your soul? How can you share this
peace—Christ’s peace—with others?
Action
Center your thoughts on the peace of Jesus Christ as you have
experienced it. Breathe deeply. Sing this song or meditate on the text:
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sinsick soul.
Sometimes I feel discouraged, and think my work’s in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit revives my soul again.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sinsick soul.
If you can’t preach like Peter, if you can’t pray like Paul,
Just tell the love of Jesus and say he died for all.
There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead to heal the sinsick soul.
