President Presents Counsel
to an International Church
In his official address to the Community of Christ 2007 World Conference, on
Sunday, March 25, President Stephen M. Veazey delivered words of counsel to the
church. Worshipers left the evening worship with a printout of the “counsel to
the church” and those watching around the world via live webcast were able to
access the document online.
President Veazey offered this counsel as a call to the church that is as
personal as the calls of individuals to specific leadership roles. He invited
the Conference and church members throughout the world to participate in
discerning the place of these words of counsel in the life of the church,
saying, “I genuinely desire to discern with the church regarding this matter as
we continue to explore together what it means to be a prophetic people.”
In preparation for and during the March 24-31 World Conference, members of
Community of Christ have been focused on the spiritual process of discernment as
a practice for individuals and groups. Church leaders describe discernment as
“an intentional process of opening to God’s will, utilizing reason, faith, and
prayerful reflection, so that our choices are aligned more closely with God’s
purposes.” A significant amount of time in the Conference schedule is devoted to
this process.
