G-13 Practicing Environmentally Friendly Stewardship (referred to First Presidency)

From the Earth Stewardship Committee

Whereas, NRSV version of Bible, Genesis 1:26-28 states, Then God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion (care) over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."  Genesis 2:15 states, The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.”; and

Whereas, Doctrine and Covenants 150:7 states, “These are portentous times. The lives of many are being sacrificed unnecessarily to the gods of war, greed, and avarice. The land is being desecrated by the thoughtless waste of vital resources. You must obey my commandments and be in the forefront of those who would mediate this needless destruction while there is yet day.”; and

Whereas, Use of energy efficient and environmentally healthy building practices provide dramatic positive impact on global resource depletion and stewardship of fragile ecosystems; and

Whereas, Members of the Community of Christ are encouraged to practice good stewardship over all vital resources of the earth in all aspects of daily life; therefore be it

Resolved, That Community of Christ building projects, either new or remodel, consider and use whenever feasible, construction resources and methods that do not deplete the earth’s natural resources, saving them for future generations, and using renewable methods whenever possible that provide heating and cooling and be it further

Resolved, That when possible, church facilities complete energy audits that analyze their energy saving potential and facilitate the use of energy saving appliances, lighting and heating equipment in maintaining their facilities.
