G-9 Greater Cooperation in
Translations and Resource Development
(motion to refer carried)
From the South America Mission Center:
Whereas, The Bylaws of the Community of Christ indicate
that “A basic principle of decision making in the Community of Christ is
common consent. Common consent respects the rights of the people to assent to
the general conduct of business within the church and to sustain those called of
God to provide leadership”; and
Whereas, Several of the languages for which the church
provides translation cover extensive geographic and cultural areas that contain
linguistic variations within these primary language; and
Whereas, These languages represent “bridges” to other
related languages; and
Whereas, A given resource could be adapted/translated
relatively easily to additional languages spoken within the church; and
Whereas, Within each language group there are volunteers
wanting to help in the creation, translation, editing, and production of written
materials; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the church encourage the production
of study resources in these various languages in a form that is readable and
understandable; and be it further
Resolved, That an advisory committee be established
for each language for which materials are translated within the church; and be
it further
Resolved, That these committees shall meet only via
the Internet and shall include the currently employed translations staff, a
representative of each country that uses resources of the primary language, and
a representative of each language related to the primary language (example:
Quechua, for Portuguese, Quiché, for Spanish); and be it further
Resolved, That each committee encourage active
participation by volunteers who can help in increasing the availability of
written resources throughout the church.
