2007 World Conference Legislation
G-11 Leadership Education in Developing Nations
(referred to the First Presidency)
From the South America Mission Center:
Whereas, The policy of the Community of Christ is to
encourage new employees in the “appointee” category to be able to obtain a
master’s degree in religion and be paid during the years during which they
attend these classes; and
Whereas, Most appointees live and work in mission centers
in developed countries, with the participation of few persons from developing
countries; and
Whereas, This has led to a gap in ministerial development
both in terms of the number of participants and the level of leadership
development; and
Whereas, Membership growth in the church in developing
countries is generally greater than in developed countries, which means that the
greatest need in the long term for developing leaders in terms of numbers of
leaders and the depth/breadth of teaching is in less-developed countries; and
Whereas, It is not the intention of the Community of Christ
that there be a gap in leadership development between developed and developing
countries; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the First Presidency and the Council
of Twelve Apostles create a strategic plan that would seek to quantify the
problem of leadership development inequities and propose possible solutions; and
be it further
Resolved, That a report on the progress being made
toward the fulfillment of this strategic plan be given to the next World
Conference.
