Joseph Smith Historic Site

Learn the story of the Latter Day Saint movement in Nauvoo during the early 1840s at the Joseph Smith Historic Site. Within the Visitor Center, you can see original paintings of Nauvoo by David Hyrum Smith as well as other artifacts and information about the city and its people.

The Visitors Center is located in Nauvoo’s historic flats just off Illinois State Highway 96 at Water Street.

May–October
Open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Open Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed the Sunday before USA Labor Day

November–December
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Closed at noon on the day before USA Thanksgiving, USA Thanksgiving, and the day after; Christmas Eve; and Christmas

January–February
Tours may be arranged by appointment

March–April
Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Admission

Admission to the Visitor Center, site orientation video, museum exhibits, and Red Brick Store is free. There is a $4.00 preservation fee per person for the guided tour of the Smith homes.

Guided Tours

Guided walking tours begin at the Visitors Center, start with a short film and continue through the Smith family’s homes.
