Spirituality: The Center of Our Story
The story of Community of Christ begins with Joseph Smith's transformative spiritual encounter in a quiet forest. The Restoration is founded on the prophetic understanding that all things are spiritual (Doctrine and Covenants 28). Joy is found when spirit and element are experienced as inseparable realities (Doctrine and Covenants 90). Wholeness is to be fostered through body, mind, and spirit as part of the peacemaking process (Doctrine and Covenants 156). Our heritage identifies Spirit as foundational, central, formative, primordial, the base from which all responses of discipleship are pursued. God's Spirit is the Light infusing matter with life, beauty, and purpose (Doctrine and Covenants 85). This sacramental view of the universe is the basis for our pursuit of shalom, the wholeness of zionic community.
