VOLLEYBALL
Coordinators – Jerry Wiley, Connie Truelove, Ken Talcott
Coaches Meeting: Each team must be represented – 10:15 a.m. Sunday
in the Gym
Officials Clinic: Sunday at 9:30 a.m. in the Gym. An adult
representative must be present from each team.
Ground Rules:
- On the track courts, the ceiling on your side will be playable. Any ball
striking the ceiling may be legally played into the opponent’s court.
- A camper may play on only one volleyball team during SPECTACULAR; hence
only one girls, boys or mixed team.
- The nets separating courts will be out of bounds; however, a player may
move into the divider curtain and play the ball legally. No person may
assist a player by moving the curtain for them.
- Matches will start on time. Any team five minutes late will forfeit the
first game of the match. If a team is ten minutes or more late, they forfeit
the entire match. If you will be late because of another contest, please
notify the court manager and the match will be delayed.
- Each team will be allowed one 30-second time-out per game. The clock will
stop for time-outs. The official will call the teams back on the court at
the end of the time-out.
- The up official will call an official time-out when necessary to allow
for abnormal game mechanics (such as team or individual sanctions,
injuries, etc.).
- One step in the court is allowed on court 2 and 4.
- Each match will consist of two games to 15 points or 18 minutes with five
minute warm-up. The first game will begin immediately after warm-up.
Eighteen minutes will be set on the clock for game one. At the end of time,
if neither eam has reached 15 points, the first team to gain a 2 point
advantage will be declared the winner. A 17 point cap will exist for all
games. If a game is tied 16-16, the next point scored will win at 17-16. This
format may change if tournament size requires. Time format for
Play-offs: 15, 15, 7; Finals – 15-15-15.
- In mixed play the following rules should be observed:
- The rotation order shall always be boy/girl. In case of injury or other
extreme circumstances, a line-up of 4 girls and 2 boys would be allowed.
- If a team contacts the ball more than once before sending it over the
net, a girl must have at least one contact.
- If on a rotation there is only one boy at the net, a boy from the back
court may come to the net to block.
- A back row player must still abide by the 10’ restraining line in
attacking.
- All serving in mixed Blue and Green Divisions will be underhanded; no
overhand or sidearm serves will be allowed. Any style of legal serving
will be acceptable in God and Red mixed play.
- Substitutes – No team cap – no individual cap. Each entry must be in
the same relative rotation position (per normal USA rules). Substitutions
may be requested during any dead ball period. At blue and green levels
substitution can occur on every rotation.
Rules to be Noted:
- A center line violation must have the athlete’s foot/hand completely over
the center line.
- In serving, a rule violation occurs when the foot touches the line of the
court before or simultaneous with ball contact.
- Each court shall have antennas to determine whether the ball passed across
the net within the court. Any ball contacting or passing over an outside
antenna shall have passed over the net outside the playing area and be the
other team’s ball.
- USAV rules presently allow a multiple first contact of the ball provided
there is only one attempt to play it. This allows a double or even triple hit,
but not a throw.
- Jewelry, caps, visors, plastic and metal hair accessories, and
"dew" rags are not allowed. Cloth bracelets on wrists and
ankles are allowed provided no beads (assuming they cannot be removed
quickly).
- Teams will not change sides during a deciding third game. The choice of
sides will be made at the coin toss and be maintained throughout the game.
- All casts and metal parts of braces must be covered.
- Failure to fulfill your officiating responsibilities will cause your team to
begin its next match five points down.
Protest and Rule Interpretation
All controversies will be settled by following this order:
- appeal to official in charge
- bring to tournament directorship
Officials
Every team must provide three officials to work the match following their
play. If you play the last match in the evening, you are responsible to provide
officials for the first round the next afternoon on the same court of last game
played. First day, teams scheduled for 2nd round matches must provide
officials for both 1st and 3rd rounds. The two teams
involved must be responsible for:
1 – down official
1 – scorekeeper
1 – timekeeper
1 – visual scorekeeper
2 – lines persons
These must be provided from the six people supplied, three by each team. Each
team must have one adult qualified as a second referee. It is mandatory
that this person attend the officials clinic at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday in the Gym.
Trainer Function:
A trainer will be provided during competition. The trainer will do taping and
any emergency first-aid needed. CAUTION: New shoes cause blisters. Have a
broken-in pair to alternate in case of the beginning of blisters. If a blister
starts, have the trainer care for it as soon as possible. The trainer will be
located on the gym floor level at the extreme east end of the Closson complex.
Outdoor Practice Courts:
Sand courts will be available immediately south of the Closson Center. They
may be used for team practice or recreational play AFTERNOON AND EVENINGS ONLY.
Organization of Play:
Tournaments: Girls, Boys and Mixed
Divisions: Gold, Red, Green, Blue
There will be four levels of play for girls, boys and mixed teams. Gold is
considered the top division skill level.
Initial play will be in seeding pools (gold/red and green/blue). Championship
play will be by division based on pool seeds.
BALLS: Each team should provide their own warm-up balls. Game balls will be
supplied.
SHOES: You must play in shoes - no flip flops or sandles. Shoes need to have non-marking soles.
Please check. No soccer shoes or running cleats on any portion of the gym floor.
STORE: A small store will be set up in the gym offering nearly new
volleyballs. These are Tachikara SV5W balls, perhaps the best in the
world.
ROSTER: Additions can be made during the week, but only through the
tournament coordinators. NO additions will be accepted for play-off competition
unless the team has injury or departure problems. Your roster is critical to the
computer scheduling system. It must be correct.
