Witnessing Disciple Series:

Witnessing Disciple Series

The Witnessing Disciple Series is a collection of missionary resources designed to assist members and congregations in their witnessing efforts and to address the questions of members and friends in the discipleship process. Each resource can be ordered separately or collectively in ready-to-use, missionary tool kits from Herald House. One kit is designed to assist members in developing their witness. The other kit is designed for use with friends who are seeking information about Jesus and/or the Community of Christ.

Member Tool Kit:
Resources for Preparing Congregations and Members for Witness
  • A Witnessing Community: A Basic Guide to Congregational Missionary Ministry - This is a beginning approach to missionary ministry that promotes the emergence of a Christ-centered and person-oriented congregation. It is built on the principle that people rather than programs or structures win people to the gospel. The emphasis throughout this guide is on the creation of inviting and caring congregational ministries. It outlines the four stages a congregation goes through in becoming a witnessing community, and is filled with ideas and suggestions for creating missionary opportunities.
  • Hospitality: Sharing God’s Welcome - This new resource focuses on reclaiming the biblical art of hospitality—the obligation of disciples to care for physical, social, and spiritual needs—and of welcoming strangers and guests into individual and corporate fellowship by creating a space for others to enter and be received as a friend. The chapters address issues of making room for hospitality in our lives and ministry; understanding the importance of food and fellowship; the power of recognizing the stranger as a child of God; exploring the shifting roles of the hosts and guests; sharing time and resources; remembering the guest; making room in our lives and congregations to receive others; looking at worship and the sacraments as an entry point for hospitality; addressing fear and boundary issues; and balancing our values and the needs of the guest. Beyond the theoretical focus provided, each of the six chapters includes a scripture focus with questions for individual or group reflection, a Community of Christ story of hospitality in practice, and a list of practical helps for congregations. A gifts assessment questionnaire is also provided as well as congregational guest surveys.
