President Veazey's Address to the Church

Q:  Why is the prophet-president addressing the church at this time?

A:  Because the 2007 World Conference changed the conference interval to every three years, President Veazey has decided to address the church in years when the conference is not held.  He believes it is very important to keep the church updated and focused on mission priorities, rather than being distracted by issues arising in various places.  The World Church Leadership Council fully supports the decision to address the church more frequently.  These addresses will occur on or near April 6 in off-conference years. 

Q:  Why near April 6?

A:  April 6 holds significance as the anniversary of the church’s official organization in 1830 and as the date in 1860 when Joseph Smith III accepted prophetic leadership of the Reorganization.  By gathering on or near this date, we will acknowledge our heritage and focus on how Christ’s purposes continue to be fulfilled through the church today.

Q:  What is the purpose of the April 5 address?

A:  President Veazey has indicated that he intends to put issues of concern in various areas in perspective and then focus on “what matters most” for our journey ahead.  The address also will begin to prepare the church for the 2010 World Conference, including thoughts on the recently released We Share: Identity, Mission, Message, and Beliefs document and the Conditions of Membership prayer, discussion, and discernment process that the worldwide church is invited to engage in.

Q:  Will announcements about changes in quorum leadership be included in the April 5 address?

A:  No. The April 5 address will not include any announcements concerning changes in quorum leadership.

Q:  What is the format for the address?

A:  Meditation music will be playing as people enter the Sanctuary and logon to the webcast, followed by a welcome and a hymn.  Three prayers of preparation will be offered then President Veazey will share his address with the church.  Presiding Evangelist David Brock will close the evening with a prayer of blessing.

Q. Can I get a copy of the address?

A: Yes. The May Herald will include the text of President Veazey’s April 5 address to the church. The text and downloadable media also will be posted on the church’s Web site in English, French, and Spanish on April 6 and links will be available through the Community of Christ Facebook group.
