Volunteers Sharon Clothier, Lee Hart, Betty Liston, and Ken Stobaugh, have participated in the Daily Prayer for Peace since 1993. |
The Daily Prayer for Peace celebrated a significant milestone on August 13, 2007, when staff, volunteers, World Church leaders, and friends gathered in the Temple sanctuary to offer the 5,000th prayer for peace.
Since December 1993, the Daily Prayer for Peace has been provided by volunteers who believe in the power of prayer. They include Temple guides, chaplains, staff, and musicians, as well as members and friends. The prayer for peace is offered every day of the year. Because we pray for a different country each day using an ecumenical prayer calendar, we are able to share prayer power with churches worldwide.
In addition to experiencing the prayer for peace in the Temple,
people throughout the world have begun to pray for peace at reunions, camps,
worship services, Sunday school classes, priesthood meetings, and other
gatherings. It has become a priority at the Peace Colloquy along with the
recognition given each year to notable peacemakers.
In Doctrine and Covenants 161:2a we are encouraged to “become a people of the
Temple—those who see violence but proclaim peace, who feel conflict yet extend
the hand of reconciliation, who encounter broken spirits and find pathways for
healing.” As we pray for peace we, in fact, become people of the Temple. Our
prayers include asking for forgiveness for our lack of peace, for wisdom,
guidance, patience, and insight. We listen for God to give us direction and
teach us peace.
If you would like to submit a prayer for peace, go to the church Web site at www.CofChrist.org/prayerpeace/. If you are in the Kansas City area and would like to join us in prayer at the Temple, come share your gift of presence with us at 1:00 p.m. central time any day of the year. If you, your congregation, or youth group would like to lead the prayers on a particular date, call Nadine Stallbaumer at 1-800-825-2806, ext. 2428, or Pam Robison, ext. 2324, to volunteer.
