Call to Prayer

Welcome today to this sacred
place, and we are happy to share the prayers with you. Each day in this
Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in
our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we’ll remember the people of Cambodia in our prayers. Cambodia is
located in Southeastern Asia. Following years of struggle with communist
rule and fighting in the 1970’s and 80’s, the United Nations sponsored
elections in 1993 to help restore some semblance of normalcy in
Cambodia. Future stability is tied to improving the country's
long-suffering economy, eradicating the entrenched culture of
corruption, reducing the size of the military and answering the troubled
question of royal succession. Coming into the 21st century, Cambodia
enjoys relative stability, but subsistence farming employs 75 percent of
the workforce and many live in poverty.
As we light our candle, may its flame cause us to open our minds, and
challenge us to new avenues of peace as we worship together. |

Fulfill the purposes of the Temple by
making its ministries manifest in your hearts. It was built from your
sacrifices and searching over many generations. Let it stand as a
towering symbol of a people who knew injustice and strife on the
frontier and who now seek the peace of Jesus Christ throughout the
world. |

Prayer for Peace by Barbara L. Beal, Blue
Springs, Missouri |
| |
O Lord of all creation,
We meet you in this sacred time to express the yearning in our hearts
for peace.
Enfold each of us with your mantel of great inner calm as we live in an
age of confusion.
Show us the real and lasting truths of your peace that we may share with
others.
There is a great concern that all might be treated with humanity, as
individuals, as equals. Grant that we may choose the best paths to
alleviate this suffering.
May we seek out and acknowledge the divine in every creature of your
world.
Give us the discerning wisdom to leave open areas in our hearts for our
differences.
Teach us tolerance.
Help us to always uphold the image of Jesus Christ, your Son, in whose
name we pray. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
We thank you, God, for all the blessings of this life.
We thank you for friends, family, and those who give particular meaning
to our lives. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We confess to you our shortcomings. In your compassion forgive our sins,
and may we consider the acts of harm we have committed against our own
families and those we care for. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for the nations of the world, and in particular on this day the
nation and the people of Cambodia. Bring your peace and reconciliation
and justice, O God, to the people of Cambodia who have suffered deeply
in Southeast Asia. May they find the peace they seek. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for all who are oppressed by poverty, disease, exploitation,
prejudice, and those who are in any other way denied their full worth as
your children. Open our eyes so that we will see our responsibilities
and be able to respond lovingly. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for the just and equitable use of the resources of your earth.
May all humanity exercise wise stewardship over everything in their
care. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
|
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Hear our prayer, O God. Today we offer ourselves as instruments of your
peace. Amen. |
| |
| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with ministry of music.
You are invited to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or meditate
for as long as you may wish.
As we leave this time of worship, let us remember whose we are, and who
we follow in our search for lasting peace in our time. Go in peace. |
