It is a pleasure to welcome you
today to this sacred place for worship and prayers for peace. Each day
in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for
peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different
country.
Today we will remember the people of Sudan in our prayers. Africa's
largest country in land area, Sudan is dominated by the Nile and its
tributaries, with mountains rising along its Red Sea coast and along the
western border with Chad. Since independence from Britain in 1956, a
north-south war has dominated Sudan's history, pitting Arab Muslims in
the northern desert against African Christians and animists in the
southern wetlands. Sudan remains a politically unstable country. While
the north remains calm, Darfur is wracked by crisis while the
aftershocks of a decade-long civil war continue to reverberate across
the south. Sudan has also faced large refugee influxes from neighboring
countries, primarily Ethiopia and Chad, and armed conflict, poor
transport infrastructure, and lack of government support have
chronically obstructed the provision of humanitarian assistance.
Today begins the annual observance of the United Nations Disarmament
Week. From October 24-30, we are reminded of the danger of the arms
race, to propagate the need for its cessation and increase public
understanding of the urgent tasks of disarmament. The United Nations
continues to promote public awareness of the problems and aims of this
week.
We greet you in the name of Jesus, the Christ. With the psalmist we say,
"Give ear to our words, O Lord; consider our meditation. Hearken unto
the voice of our cry, our God, for unto thee will we pray." |

| Scripture Reading: Doctrine and Covenants
163:3a-b |
| |
You are called to create pathways in the
world for peace in Christ to be relationally and Culturally incarnate.
The hope of Zion is realized when the vision of Christ is embodied in
communities of generosity, justice, and peacefulness.
Above all else, strive to be faithful to Christ’s vision of the
peaceable Kingdom of God on earth. Courageously challenge cultural,
political, and religious trends that are contrary to the reconciling and
restoring purposes of God. Pursue peace. |

Prayer for Peace by Gail Mengel, Independence,
Missouri |
| |
O God, our companion, friend, and shepherd through all
ages and with all peoples, we come in the safety and peace of this
environment knowing that so many stand this day with open arms of pain.
We pray this day for all people in this world who walk in shadows and
dark valleys. We pray for children who are hungry, lost, afraid,
forsaken, and blinded by hollow vision and hopelessness. We pray for
women who will be forever damaged in body and spirit because of
injustice, mutilation and tyranny. We pray for men who have used power
and position for self-gratification. We pray for all the men, women, and
children who have suffered as victims of aggressors.
In particular, we pray this day, God, for those who dare speak on behalf
of all, even ourselves. May we be freed from the shackles and traditions
that bind us.
May we have the faith to believe in the opportunities that are in our
hands. May we believe in the power of your love to heal this world and
to abide in the hearts of all peoples. We ask you to continue to help us
find the shared vision for peaceful ways to interact and respond.
Bless us all: servants, rulers, leaders, followers, mothers, fathers,
sisters, brothers, children, risk takers, doubters. Bless us as your
children. Make us responsive to your purposes. May the testimony of your
son, Jesus Christ, give vitality and meaning to all, that we might find
ways to eliminate barriers and work together to heal the nations, and
one day see your world at peace. We pray in the faith and knowledge of
Jesus Christ. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Lord of all nations, we thank you for knowing us. We
thank you for family, friends, those who will be friends, the earth and
all its bounty. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We lament the causes of injustice and seek enlightenment that we may
understand better our part in peace for the world. We would not forget
the need for peace in ourselves, our families, our nation, and our
church. We confess that we are less than you created us to be and humbly
ask forgiveness. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
O God, You created us to be whole persons, but many of us are broken.
Your people are sick, lonely, in jail, oppressed. Fill us with the power
to heal each other and to be healed. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
O God, help those in authority, in all countries and all institutions,
to govern wisely for the benefit of all. With others across the world,
we especially ask this on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Sudan
this day. May their dream of peace and freedom be realized someday soon. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
O God, teach all persons that there is more
to bind nations together than to drive them apart, and that there is no
place in your realm for war and intolerance. Fill us with understanding
we humbly ask. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Hear our prayers, O God, and enlighten our minds as we learn of your
Peace. Amen. |
| |
| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with ministry of music. We
invite you to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or meditate for
as long as you may wish.
May we leave this place with the peace that only comes from God. Amen. |
