Call to Prayer
Lighting of CandleInvitation |

Good afternoon, and welcome to
this time of worship. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit
of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day
we pray for a different country.
Today we will remember the people of Liberia in our prayers. Liberia is
located in western Africa. In August 2003, a comprehensive peace
agreement ended 14 years of civil war and prompted the resignation of
former president Charles Taylor, who was exiled to Nigeria. The National
Transitional Government of Liberia (NTGL) - composed of rebels,
government, and civil society groups - assumed control in October 2003.
The United Nations Mission in Liberia, which maintains a strong presence
throughout the country, completed a disarmament program for former
combatants in late 2004, but the security situation is still volatile
and the process of rebuilding the social and economic structure of this
war-torn country remains sluggish.
May the God of all people guide our worship so that we may be able to
say, "Yes, Lord, it is good to meet with you. Enlighten us and teach us,
we pray." |

| Scripture Reading: 1 Peter 3:10-12 INT |
| |
Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep the tongue from evil
and the lips from deceitful talk.
They must turn from evil to good,
they must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of Our God
are on the just,
and the ears of Our God
attend to their prayers. |

Prayer for Peace by JudyM. Kramer,
Independence, Missouri |

God of all creation, I approach you today, mindful of
the victims of war and praying that the power of your spirit will work
within all people to bring peace to the world. God of all creation,
hear the cries of your people:
The cries of infants who suckle but receive no nourishment,
The cries of toddlers who have no energy to play,
The cries of children who reach out to relief workers for food,
The cries of those who receive none,
The cries of starving mothers who watch their children starve.
God of all creation, hear the cries of your people:
The cries of those maimed by weapons of war,
The limbless, the sightless, the grotesque,
The cries of those who cannot purge from their minds the witnessing of
other’s injuries,
The cries of children watching their parents die,
The cries of parents watching their children die,
The cries of those commissioned to heal, finding the task is too great.
God of all creation, hear the cries of your people:
The cries of those who wage war, but know not why,
The cries of the orphaned, the starving, the homeless,
The cries of those who are totally alone,
The cries of those who are bereft of hope,
The cries of those who work for peace, but begin to despair.
God of all creation, hear our cries.
In the name of the Prince of Peace we pray. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
As we are together, praying for peace, let us be truly
with each other. Let us be aware of the source of being common to us all
and to all living things. We praise you, Great God. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Evoking the presence of the Great Compassion, let us fill our hearts
with our own compassion—towards ourselves and towards all living beings.
Let us pray that all persons realize they are brothers and sisters, all
nourished from the same source of life. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We especially remember Liberia at this time. May all warfare cease and
may each person be able to call you “God.” |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Let us pray that we ourselves cease to be the cause of suffering to each
other. Let us plead with ourselves to live in a way which will not
deprive other living beings of air, water, food, shelter, or the chance
to live. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
With humility, with awareness of the
existence of life, and of the sufferings that are going on around us,
let us pray for the establishment of peace in our hearts and on earth. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any current concern or event in our
community, city, state, nation or world that you feel needs to be held
up to God for prayerful consideration. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Hear our collective prayers, O Prince of Peace, that your peace may
become the peace of this world. Amen. |
| |
| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with Ministry of Music.
You are invited to remain to pray or meditate in the quiet of this place
for as long as you may wish.
Let us leave this house and become the peacemakers we are called to be.
The God of peace will be our guide and our blessing. Amen. |
