Invitation

Welcome today to this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.

Today we will hold up the people of Grenada in our prayers. An island located in the Caribbean, Grenada is one of the smallest independent countries in the western hemisphere. Grenada is known as the spice island because of its production of nutmeg, mace, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. The island was seized by a Marxist military council on October 19, 1983. Six days later the island was invaded by US forces and those of six other Caribbean nations, which quickly captured the ringleaders and their hundreds of Cuban advisers. Free elections were reinstituted the following year.

We greet you in the name of God who calls us to peace in our time and for our day. Let us worship the Prince of Peace.

You who are my disciples must be found continuing in the forefront of those organizations and movements which are recognizing the worth of persons and are committed to bringing the ministry of my Son to bear on their lives.

Prayer for Peace by Bruce Lindgren, Independence, Missouri

  O God of Peace,

We gather today to rest for a few moments in your peaceful presence. We are grateful for the opportunity to do so, and we pray that your Holy Spirit will attend to us as we focus our attention on those things that make for peace.

We know, O God, that you have made us for yourself, and for each other. We ask that we might have the courage and the wisdom to be present to the needs of others--that we might be willing to listen and to share our concern with those who are in need. We ask that we might be compassionate people--that we might understand the needs of others deeply within ourselves.

For we know that you have been compassionate with us through the sharing of your Son, Jesus Christ, who came and lived among us as one who lived as we live and who felt as we feel. We know that he entered into human life fully and that he experienced our own lack of peace even as he brought to us the possibility of peace.

Throughout the world today, O God, there are many who need your peace. Through war and persecution and famine, there are many who are in great need. We pray for them your blessing. There are others who are in need because of broken relationships. We pray for them your healing. There are still others who are in despair because they sense their own incompleteness. We pray for them your wholeness.

As we gather together today in the peace and quietness of this moment, we are aware of the great needs throughout our world and within our own hearts. May our un-ease become an occasion for renewed commitment, and may your Holy Spirit call us to be agents of your peace. Teach us peace; bring us peace; make us agents of peace.

In the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate.
Creator God, we praise you and give you thanks because you not only set in motion all creation, but you continue to guide and direct and sustain that creation. Guide all earth's people so that we will use your creation in a just and equitable way. We desire that none go hungry, cold, or lonely.
The People Pray in Silence
We ask divine forgiveness of our selfishness and pride which has made us less than you created us to be. We bring to you our special needs and concerns at this time. Hear us we pray.
The People Pray in Silence
Many times a small band of people have made a great change in society that has overcome the complacent majority. Help us to be such "changers" as we work for peace.
The People Pray in Silence
We would also remember, and ask your continued guidance for, the nation of Grenada. We thank you for all people there who are seeking peace.
The People Pray in Silence
Please use this space to pray for any current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
The People Pray in Silence
Our God and our friend, we give you praise, and honor, and glory as we offer ourselves to be instruments of your peace on earth. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Sending Forth
We conclude our service today with ministry of music. You are invited to remain to pray or meditate in the quiet of this place for as long as you may wish.

May the God of peace, of glory, and righteousness, keep us to fulfill our desires to be peacemakers in the world. Let us go forth and teach peace.
