Call to Prayer

Welcome today to this time of
prayer, and thank you for joining us in worship. Each day in this Temple
dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our
world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Ecuador in our prayers. Located in
South America, The "Republic of the Equator" was one of three countries
that emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830. The smallest
country in the rugged Andean highlands, Ecuador has an array of vibrant
indigenous cultures, well-preserved colonial architecture, otherworldly
volcanic landscapes and dense rainforest. A border war with Peru that
flared in 1995 was resolved in 1999. More recently the government of
Ecuador is dealing with unrest in opposition to widespread
privatization, the dollarization of the economy and to other
International Monetary Fund proposals, which threaten to raise costs of
essential goods and service. General strikes, road blockades, building
occupations, media outlet hijackings and bombings have been reported.
We greet you in the name of God who calls us to peaceful living. |

God of love and peace,
Hear us once again as we pray for conditions for which we long, and yet
of which we understand so little. As we attempt to focus on that which
we have come to understand as your divine call to us, there wells up
within us a desire to more unreservedly join you in the quest for
realization of these gifts in our world. We stand in awe as we
contemplate your many acts of love and forgiveness that somehow enable
us to seek your presence. In this moment we come to sense even more
fully our need to be forgiven, and to commit ourselves more completely
to your call.
God of love and peace, we have experienced the presence of your peace as
your love and forgiveness have permeated our persons and our gatherings.
We have known little true peace, yet enough to cause us to hunger and
thirst for its fuller realization in our lives, our families, our
nations, our world. You have enabled us to understand that the absence
of peace does not mean you are unwilling to have peace reign over all
your creation, but rather that we have proven unwilling and unworthy to
have your peace abide in our presence.
God of love and peace, cleanse us that we may receive your peace and go
forth as your ambassadors of love, emissaries of peace. Through Christ
Jesus, our Lord, we pray. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Great God, Creator of all that is or has ever been, we
praise you. We thank you for all the blessings of this life; for family,
friends, and those who give particular meaning to our lives. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We confess our shortcomings before you, even our sins that prevent us
from being the persons you created us to be. Forgive us, we humbly pray,
and guide us into paths of truer servanthood. Help us to be the
peacemakers we yearn to be. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We lift up before you the country and the people of Ecuador. May they
know peace among themselves and with all your people. Guide all nations
into right living, we pray. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
May our desires be a reflection of your plan for all creation, as we ask
your blessing on our needs and concerns this day. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
|
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Hear our prayer, O God, as we offer ourselves to be instruments of your
peace. Amen. |

| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with Ministry of Music. We
invite you to remain in the quiet of this place and pray or meditate for
as long as you may wish.
As we go back into the world from this time of prayer for peace let us
remember Jesus' words, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto
you." God will guide us as we work for peace in our world. |
