Welcome today to this sacred place, and it is good to
share with you in prayer. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the
pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition,
each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will lift up the people of Cuba in our prayers. Cuba is an
island located in the Caribbean, south of Florida. In 1961 Fidel Castro
established the first communist state in the Western Hemisphere. Since
then more than a million Cubans have moved to the U.S. Cuba's centrally
planned economy initially brought dramatic gains in education, health
care, and social welfare. The economy crashed after Cuba was abandoned
by the former U.S.S.R. and Eastern European trading partners in the
early 1990s, with food and energy being tightly rationed. Investments
from Canada, Europe and Latin America, as well as China are helping to
improve Cuba’s economy. Cuba’s natural beauty brings in millions of
tourists each year who come to see the thousands of species of plants
and animals that can be found nowhere else on Earth.
This day is the first Sunday in the season of Lent. It is a time of
penitence, so each one can cleanse the soul before we begin our Lenten
fast. May the Spirit lead us in our worship of the giver of light and
peace. |

You who are my disciples must be found
continuing in the forefront of those organizations and movements which
are recognizing the worth of persons and are committed to bringing the
ministry of my Son to bear on their lives. |

Prayer for Peace by Miriam Mann, Council
Bluffs, Iowa |

Lord God, you have been searching for us, that is why we
seek you now. We thank you and praise you for all blessings. Give us new
understanding and appreciation for your wonderful gifts. Reveal your
will and what is best for our lives during this service of worship, we
pray.
We all sin and need your forgiveness, so help us to repent this day.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for showing us how valuable we are to you. We
need your great knowledge and understanding to promote peace in our
lives. Guide us through the challenges and problems we face. Help us to
find new ways to explore and reach your goal for peace on earth. Direct
our steps so that we walk with you.
Renew and strengthen us through your Spirit. Incline our hearts to your
word, that we may speak peace with love and assurance to others. Let our
faith take what you offer, God for we ask it in Jesus' name and for his
glory. Amen |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
We praise you, God of all nations, for your mercy is
vast, and your greatness beyond our comprehension. In peace we pray to
you, Lord God, and dare to ask your blessing for all people in their
daily life and work; for our families, friends, and neighbors, and for
those who are alone. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We remember, and ask your guidance, for all who sorrow, fear, or have
special needs. May we follow your example and minister in your stead. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We especially pray for your people in Cuba this day. Be with them and
fit a blessing to their needs. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We confess our shortcomings. Forgive us, we pray, and may we go from
here strengthened in body and mind for the task before us to be your
peacemakers in our world. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We remember the concerns and needs of those gathered here this day. Be
with us, we pray, and help us to learn to listen for you. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
|
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Lord, hear our prayers, and send your Holy Spirit to be with us as we
seek to know and do your will. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen |

We conclude our service with Ministry of Music. You are
invited to remain to pray or meditate in the quiet of this place for as
long as you may wish.
Now may the God of peace guide us into those paths of righteousness
which lead to peace. Let us go forth and be the peacemakers and
peacekeepers we are called to be. |
