It is good to welcome you to
this sacred place, and thank you for your gift of presence and prayer
support. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we
pray to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a
different country.
Today we will remember the people of Afghanistan in our prayers. Located
in Asia, Afghanistan was once well known to hikers as a place to stop
for unparalleled hospitality, fantastic food, and great hiking. Its
history as a country spans little more than two centuries, although it
has contributed to the greatness of many Central Asian empires. By the
19th century, Afghanistan found itself often in conflict with the
British, and its trade was tilted heavily toward the USSR from World War
I onwards. After a bloody revolution in 1978, Afghanistan rapidly
deteriorated. Conflict between the procommunist, antireligious
government, the local tribes, and the USSR continued until 1989, when
the Soviets withdrew. The Taliban control of the country following the
Soviet withdrawal, and NATO along with the United States has continued
to support the Afghans in the fight against their rising of power. The
Afghans continue to strive for an end to violence.
Blessed is the name of our God who is mindful of us as we worship the
Prince of Peace in faith and joy. |

| Scripture Reading: Doctrine and Covenants
163:3a-b |
| |
You are called to create pathways in the
world for peace in Christ to be relationally and culturally incarnate.
The hope of Zion is realized when the vision of Christ is embodied in
communities of generosity, justice, and peacefulness. Above all else,
strive to be faithful to Christ’s vision of the peaceable Kingdom of God
on earth. Courageously challenge cultural, political, and religious
trends that are contrary to the reconciling and restoring purposes of
God. Pursue peace. |

Prayer for Peace by Miriam Mann, North Platte,

Divine and gracious Father, encourage us to be humble
and receptive to the Holy Spirit this day. We thank you for all gifts,
and especially for the gift of your Son. He is our forgiveness and
salvation. We claim His promises for greater understanding and service
in His kingdom. Let your glory shine on us now.
We pray for the spiritual well-being of others and ourselves. Enable us
to bear one another’s burdens and to live in peace. You know our desires
and needs. Help each one of us to “fight the good fight of faith, and to
lay hold on eternal life.’ Grant Christ’s meekness and lowliness of
heart to us that we may dwell with you forever. In Jesus worthy name, we
ask these things. Amen. |
