Call to Prayer

Welcome today to this sacred
place and this time of prayer. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the
pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition,
each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Spain in our prayers. Located in
Southwestern Europe, Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th
centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. In 1986
Spain joined the European Union. In 1992 Barcelona hosted the Olympic
Games, Seville hosted Expo 92 and Madrid was declared the European
Cultural Capital. Separatist agitation born of historical regional
differences, most pronounced in the Basque country and in Catalonia,
still challenges national unity, but a strong national peace movement
has developed to counteract terrorist activities. Unemployment continues
to be a problem, but recent economic growth makes the country's future
outlook more positive.
Christ, whose presence is like daybreak and shines in the darkness of
all our pain and fear, calls us to worship. May the light of Christ fill
our hearts this day and lead us to peace. |

| Scripture Reading: Psalm 34:15, 17-18 IP |
| |
The eyes of Our God are on those who do
justice, and God’s ears are open to their cry.
The just cry out, and Our God hears, and saves them from all their
troubles.
Our God is close to the brokenhearted and rescues those whose spirits
are crushed. |

Prayer for Peace by Peter Judd, Kansas City,
Missouri |

Lord God,
Creator of all,
Giver of all gifts,
Lover of all:
We pray to you on behalf of our troubled world,
fraught with conflict, injustice, and misunderstanding.
The peace that we seek often seems so unreachable,
so far from possibility.
We yearn for things to be different than they are--for the
old world to become new.
We acknowledge our own participation in the difficulties of
your times, and so we pledge our intent and resources
to the cause of peace.
May we accept your presence in our lives that calls us to be
peacemakers.
May we unite with others to make our world a better place to live.
We pray in the name of Christ our Lord. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Lord of all nations, we thank you for knowing us. We
thank you for family, friends, those who will be friends, the earth and
all its bounty. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We rejoice when one step is made toward peace between nations but know
the journey is long and the steps are many. On this day, please hear our
prayers concerning the nation of Spain, its leaders and its people. May
they use their knowledge in the cause of peace. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We lament the causes of injustice and seek enlightenment that we may
understand better our part in peace for the world. We would not forget
the need for peace in ourselves, our families, our nation, and our
church. We confess that we are less than you created us to be and humbly
ask forgiveness. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any current concern or event in our
community, city, state, nation or world that you feel needs to be held
up to God for prayerful consideration. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Let us leave this place and offer ourselves
as instruments of peace in our world. Amen. |
| |
| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with ministry of music.
You are invited to remain to pray or meditate in the quiet of this place
for as long as you may wish.
Let us go from this house and be the peacemakers and peacekeepers we are
called to be. Go in peace. |
