Gathering in Silence
Call to Prayer
Lighting of CandleInvitation |
| |
We greet you the name of the
Creator who calls us to peace. Welcome today to this sacred place. Each
day in this Temple, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition,
each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Seychelles in our prayers.
Seychelles is a group of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. Uninhabited,
but known to Arab traders, the islands were annexed by France in the
18th century, and later Great Britain. Independence came in 1976. Among
the islands you will find a luxuriant, tropical paradise. There are more
shades of blue and green in the Seychelles than it is possible to
imagine. Forming a backdrop to the relaxed tropical image of the
Seychelles are the rhythms, colors and flavors of Africa. Tourism,
fishing, and copra and spice production are important.
Let us unite as one to seek wisdom and understanding in our quest for
peace in our time and for this world. Let us remember those places where
peace seems to have vanished, but undergirding all, let us worship our
God this day. |

| Scripture Reading: Isaiah 61:8-11 NRSV |
| |
For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery
and wrongdoing.
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
Their descendants shall be known among the nations,
and their offspring among the peoples: all who see them shall
acknowledge
that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed.
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my
God;
for he has clothed me
with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before
all the nations. |

Prayer for Peace by Richard E. Kohlman, Lee's
Summit, Missouri |
| |
Creator, sustainer, and lover of life, what a beautiful
world you have blessed humanity with. What beauty we find in life
created in your image. We want to just sit here, in this place of peace,
and feel your love.
But we cannot sit. For through the silence we seek comes the penetrating
wails of anguish of a suffering world where there is but fragile peace
at best and where people and their spirits and their hopes are dashed
upon the rocks of prejudice, and greed, and power.
Into this world you call us with the clarion call of a trumpet, calling
us to be a people of peace, reconcilers, and healers of the spirit.
Strengthen our faith, now, this day, and prepare us to witness of the
wholeness of body, mind, and spirit which comes in the life and ministry
of Jesus. Make us your hands, flesh of your word, giving hope to your
world with redeeming presence and activity.
May we not waver in the valley of death's shadows but trust always in
the presence of your spirit which goes before us, even now. In the name
of Christ we pray. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Our Gracious God, we thank you for so many things that
give us pleasure: beaches, mountains, valleys, fruits and flowers.
Indeed, all nature celebrates you, their creator, in desert or rain
forest, on mountain or plain, in summer as well as in our winter land.
Thank you, O Lord, our God, for all you have done to sustain us. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We remember the poor, the dispossessed, the rich, the black, the white,
all the peoples of the earth whatever their nation, color, or creed. May
we all know peace, Great God. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Thank you for the people who dwell in Seychelles, for in them we see a
reflection of all the races of the world. Help them that they may they
