We greet you in the name of the Prince of peace, and welcome you to this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.

Today we will remember the people of Russia in our prayers. Stretching from Europe to Asia, Russia spans 11 time zones. Heartland of the former Soviet Union, Russia is now officially a federation, with ethnic groups such as the Tatars and Bashkirs holding autonomous republics. Russia struggles in its efforts to build a democratic political system and market economy to replace the strict social, political, and economic controls of the communist period. This is a land of snow and deadly winters, but also of rivers that meander across meadows and a midsummer sun that never sets. Its people, in the words of a Russian proverb, 'love to suffer', yet they also love to rejoice and can be disarmingly generous and hospitable. Today Russia is dealing with soaring drug abuse, a murder rate twice as high as the USA and commerce held ransom by racketeers.

God of all peoples, all nations, and all religions, we praise you. Open our hearts and minds to your will at this time of our worship, we pray. Amen.

Scripture Reading: Doctrine and Covenants 157:16
In the many places where you are called to labor, the forces of darkness and destruction are active indeed, and seem to hold sway. Your hearts are burdened by the magnitude of the tasks that are yours in bringing the light of my gospel into such darkness. Nevertheless, I have heard your prayers when you have cried out to me, and I have been with you in the places where you occupy. I am aware of your desires to serve me and my assurance is that as you go forth, your offerings of faith and service are acceptable to me.

Prayer for Peace by Sheryl Holstein, Roswell, Georgia

  Dear God,

We confess to times of insensitivity, ignorance, judgment, indifference, hatred and greed. Help us tear down the walls that separate us from each other. Lord, let us see you in the faces of our brothers and sisters. Let us hear the cries of the frightened.

Living on every continent are those who are oppressed, hungry, and heavy laden. As we merge in your love, help us unfold the red bud of passion as we become a people of compassion. Let us keep the Lamp of Life burning. Free us from our own limitations that we might free others. Renew in us your Spirit, that we might be faithful to each other in your love.

Together we can build your community, in our hearts, with our minds, words, and deeds. May our hands join, our minds unite, and our hearts beat as one.

This is our prayer of peace. We lay it at your feet that it may be acceptable and we all might be healed in your love.

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate.
Lord of all space, we thank you for knowing us. We thank you for family, friends, those who will be friends, the earth, and all its bounty.
The People Pray in Silence
We confess that we are less than you created us to be and humbly ask your forgiveness.
The People Pray in Silence
We rejoice when one step is made toward peace between nations, but we know the journey is long and the steps are many. At this time we ask your guidance and blessing on Russia.
The People Pray in Silence
We pray for ourselves that we may not be divided, but be together in our hearts because you have taught us that all persons are our brothers and sisters.
The People Pray in Silence
We pray that you will heal the pain of those who have suffered the loss of family or of land, that bitter hurt may be transformed into healing and love.
The People Pray in Silence
We pray for all peoples, that your light may shine upon them, that the spirit of justice and mutual forbearance may be established, and that the spirit of love and peace will be felt.
The People Pray in Silence
Please use this space to pray for any current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
The People Pray in Silence
O Prince of Peace, stretch forth your wounded hands in blessing over all people, to heal and to restore, and to draw us to yourself and to one another in love. Amen.

Sending Forth
We will conclude our service today with Ministry of Music. We invite you to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or meditate for as long as you may wish.

Let us go forth now to be God's people in our world and share the peace of Christ.
