Call to Prayer

We welcome you today to the
quiet of this sacred place. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the
pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition,
each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of San Marino in our prayers. Located
in southern Europe, an enclave in Central Italy, San Marino is the third
smallest state in Europe (after the Holy See and Monaco) and also claims
to be the world's oldest republic. According to tradition, it was
founded by a Christian stonemason named Marinus in 301 A.D. San Marino's
foreign policy is aligned with that of Italy. Social and political
trends in the republic also track closely with those of its larger
neighbor. San Marino takes pride in its finely minted coins, ceremonial
guard, and postage stamps. Well-preserved castles and sweeping vistas of
the Adriatic coast enchant 3.5 million visitors a year.
We greet you in the name of God, our Creator and Guide, who calls us to
worship. |

Such is the tender mercy of our God,
who from on high
will bring the Rising Sun to
visit us,
to give light to those who live
in darkness and the shadow of
death
and to guide our feet
into the way of peace. |

God--
How many times do we have to hurt each other? When will we realize that
arguing does nothing towards building your kingdom?
God, we are flawed beings—not because you created us that way, but
because of choices we have made—and continue to make.
You offer the gift of healing…standing with arms open in invitation. Yet
we continue to turn away.
Forgive our stubborn pride—our conviction of our rightness—our judgment
and lack of mercy.
Open our hearts to see the woundedness of those around us. Grant us
wisdom in the words we use with each other.
There are so many forces that would tear us apart…that delight in
violence. Give us strength to stand against those forces—to be
peacemakers in the name of the Prince of Peace.
Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
God of all the earth and those who dwell thereon, we
pray that the light of peace will heal the dark places of the earth. We
pray for those who suffer the destruction and desolation of war and
human selfishness. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We hold to the light of God's love and healing the children, youth, and
adults of San Marino. They are working to make their country one of
peace. Be with them, we ask, and give them strength to continue on this
path. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for courage to be your presence in actions of justice,
compassion, tenderness, and love. We ask for divine forgiveness when we
have not been compassionate or loving or just. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Hear us, O God, as we pray for others who are victims of abuse, neglect,
hatred, and illness. May your light fill all the world. Help us to use
the discoveries of science to foster peace, not war. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Let us thank God that in the midst of
incredible difficulties, courage and determination, He sustains those
who suffer. May we be able to say, "This is enough; war is not the way
to settle our differences. We will be a people of mediation." |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
|
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We lift our hearts and minds and voices in honor, praise, and glory to
you, Great God of Peace. Help us to keep our resolves to be a people of
peace, to create peace in our world, and to teach peace to our children.
In the name of the Prince of Peace we pray. Amen |
