Welcome, and thank you for
joining us in the prayers for peace today. Each day in this Temple
dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our
world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Hungary in our prayers. Hungary is
located in Central Europe. By the late 1980s reform-minded Hungary had
lost faith in communism, shaken by sagging productivity and the highest
per capita foreign debt in Eastern Europe. In 1989 the government
abolished censorship, dismantled barriers along the Austrian border, and
called for privatization of industry, religious freedom, and free
elections. Foreign investment and private companies are flourishing. The
economy is strong, with low inflation and falling interest rates.
European Union member countries account for more than 60 percent of
Hungarian exports. Now a member of NATO, the dream of 1956 has become
the reality
Come, let us enter into this worship with joy and celebration as we pray
for peace in our time and for our day, and for the whole human family. |

| Scripture Reading: Isaiah 35 1-2, 5-10 NRSV |
| |
The wilderness and the dry land shall be
glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall
blossom abundantly. Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the
ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and
the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth
in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall
become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. A highway shall
be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not
travel on it, but it shall be for God's people. No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come upon it, but the redeemed shall walk
there. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with
singing. |

Prayer for Peace by Carol Oliver Wilkins,
Pensacola, Florida |

Listen to my heart, O Lord
it cries out for a world unencumbered
by hatred, violence, inequality and bitterness.
It searches for the paths that lead
us all to Your peace.
But blindness and self-will
often prohibit our vision of peace
as we seek only our own agenda.
Forgive us Lord, for seeking our own kingdoms first,
while Your kingdom waits and peace remains unfound.
Show us, eternal God
the way of Your Son.
Help us to become empowered as
peacemakers in a society
torn apart and covered
with scars.
Help us make our desire
for peace so important
that we're willing to
live bare by our openness
and acceptance of one another.
Let us see each other,
as You see us,
and love enough
to give peace a chance.
Lord, engulf us with Your love,
and let us truly come to know Your peace,
that the world may also know that peace
and become Your kingdom.
Hear our prayer, O God, as we try diligently to
be Your children. We pray in the name of
our Redeemer, even Jesus. Amen. |

peace, one with another. |
| The People Pray in Silence |

Lord Jesus, we have not always been at peace, or even kind to one
another. Forgive us, we humbly pray, and open our minds and our hearts
to see your will for our lives. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We lift up the people of Hungary to you, and pray that you may grant
them peace within their own nation as well as with their neighbors. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
O Lord, there are so many nations at war with one another today. We pray
for them. We also pray for the leaders who seek their own good to the
detriment of their citizens. Great God, we pray for the people of all
nations who seek peace with justice. Bless their efforts with your Holy
Spirit, we humbly ask. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Each one of us here have needs and concerns.
We ask your comforting spirit and your spirit of intelligence to direct
our thoughts and actions. We desire to be a people of peace. Teach us of
peace this day we pray. |
