Call to Prayer
Lighting of CandleInvitation |

Welcome, and thank you for
coming to join us in prayer today. Your presence is appreciated. Each
day in this Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for
peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different
country.
Today we will hold up the people of Burundi in our prayers. Located in
Central Africa, wide-spread, often intense ethnic violence between
factions in Burundi between 1993 and 2000 created hundreds of thousands
of refugees and left tens of thousands dead. The new government faces
many challenges, particularly from the country's last rebel group who
remains outside of the peace process and continue attacks in the western
provinces of Burundi Basic goods and services, such as food, medicine,
and electricity, are in short supply. Although the government is trying
to diversify the country's economy and modernize its budgetary
practices, Burundi's poverty and disorganization prove to be almost
insurmountable hurdles.
Today we remember Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter
commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles.
We light this candle as a symbol of our commitment to a just and
peaceful world. May the peace of the God who has called us here be with
us as we worship together. |

The Spirit of the One you follow is the
spirit of love and peace. That Spirit seeks to abide in the hearts of
those who would embrace its call and live its message. The path will not
always be easy, the choices will not always be clear, but the cause is
sure and the Spirit will bear witness to the truth, and those who live
the truth will know the hope and the joy of discipleship in the
community of Christ. |

Prayer for Peace by Daniel Clifford, Adelaide,
Australia |
| |
Dear God,
Please give Peace on earth so that there is no more fighting, war, and
hunger.
I pray that people will not hurt each other but will learn to love each
other.
Thank you, Jesus, for when you calmed the sea. Help us to know that calm
which your Peace can bring.
When the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost the disciples were
afraid, but you gave them your Peace. Please give us that Peace, too.
Please forgive us Lord for all the bad things we have done, the bad
things we did this morning - and last night.
Thank you for Peace, Lord, the gift of Peace, Jesus, and all that he
suffered for us by dying on the Cross. Thank you for the Holy Spirit
which brings us your Peace.
You were there in the beginning, you have always been there, and you are
with us now. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Our Creator, we praise you for sending the Prince of
Peace. Help us to become like him, and learn to become the peacemakers
we need to be. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We praise you for families and friends, food and shelter, warmth and
joy, but we know there are many who don’t experience these good things
in life. We ask you to teach us to share your goodness. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for the nation of Burundi, their leaders and their people. How
can you hope for peace when living day to day is an almost impossible
task, when all that surrounds you is death and destruction? Lord, we
know that with you all things are possible, guide the people of Burundi
through this terrible time, comfort the bereaved and give hope to the
hopeless, that someday they may know peace in their land. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We confess to you our shortcomings. In your mercy, we ask forgiveness
for things left undone or for things which hurt another. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We ask your blessing for those who are oppressed by poverty, disease,
exploitation, and prejudice. May each of us realize the worth of another
and not add to the distress of anyone. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We hold up for your blessing the special concerns of those gathered here
this day. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
|
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Hear our prayers, O God. Today we offer ourselves as instruments of your
peace. Amen. |
