Good afternoon, and welcome
today to this time of prayer. Each day in this Temple dedicated to the
pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In addition,
each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Brazil in our prayers. Located in
South American, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822. By far the
largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more
than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the
country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to
civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural
growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural
resources and a large labor pool, it is today South America's leading
economic power and a regional leader. Highly unequal income distribution
remains a pressing problem. Over 50 million Brazilians remain truly
poor, many desperately so. Gains in education, land reform and welfare
compete against a sickly health system, urban overcrowding, rural
landlessness and environmental abuse. The nation encompasses about half
the Amazon rain forest, home to 150,000 Indians and countless plant and
animal species. The government is making progress in conserving the
tropical rain forest and protecting the indigenous people.
We are here to pray for help to bring peace to our world. May God bless
us and lead us. |

| Scripture Reading: Doctrine and Covenants
161:3a-c |
| |
Open your hearts and feel the yearnings of
your bothers and sisters who are lonely, despised, fearful, neglected,
unloved. Reach out in understanding, clasp their hands, and invite all
to share in the blessings of community created in the name of the One
who suffered on behalf of all.
Do not be fearful of one another. Respect each life journey, even in its
brokenness and uncertainty, for each person has walked along at times.
Be ready to listen and slow to criticize, lest judgments be unrighteous
and unredemptive.
Be patient with one another, for creating sacred community is arduous,
and even painful. But it is to loving community such as this that each
is called. Be courageous and visionary, believing in the power of just a
few vibrant witnesses to transform the world. Be assured that love will
overcome the voices of fear, division, and deceit. |

Prayer for Peace by Betty Gurney, Victoria,

Great Creator, when we view the grandeur of this world
that you have created, we wonder at our arrogance and we pray that we
will humble ourselves and rejoice in your power. This day, Lord, our
praises rise like eagles and beyond our normal mortal realm. The beauty,
the bounty, the immensity of this world fills us with awe. We pray that
we will be fully aware of our stewardship over all that has been
created. We ask, Oh God, that with our abundance we will be aware of all
those who live in poverty in this land and all other lands. Move us to
share in whatever way we can. Help those of us who have much, keep our
wants under control so that we might be generous in our giving.
Our thanks seem inadequate for so great a gift but we pray that our
love for you will overflow into action, action that will spread like
fire, action that will bring the hope of peace to many.
We pray, too, that your Holy Spirit will be recognized by those in
places of power, that they will be guided to work for peace in whatever
land they dwell. The people of the world need peace, they need rest,
they need comfort, they need their homes to be safe.
May the purpose to which this Temple was dedicated be enhanced by the
workings of your spirit, the devotion of those who work from here, and
the combined prayers and efforts of the people of the world. Our needs
are great Lord, but our trust is in your Word. Help the people of your
world achieve Peace. Amen. |

| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with ministry of music. We
invite you to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or meditate for
as long as you may wish.
It is our faith that God is the creator of all people and loves each
person and each nation without qualification. May we see the face of
Jesus Christ in all of God's children. May God's grace touch each of us
with a full measure of love, and may our lives and voices be a witness
to that divine Presence. |
