Welcome, and thank you for
joining us in the prayers for peace today. Each day in this Temple
dedicated to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our
world. In addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Uruguay in our prayers. Located in
South America, Uruguay may be a small country but it has impressive
artistic and literary traditions. It’s ranchers raise cattle and sheep
on the well-watered grasslands that blanket most of Uruguay. Education
is compulsory and free, though the annual growth rate of one of Latin
America's most literate populations averages just 0.7 percent. After
independence was declared in 1825, civil wars disrupted the republic for
almost 75 years. Stability in the early 20th century encouraged economic
growth, based on exports of meat, wool, and hides. Economic
diversification, including development of hydroelectric power, has
spread optimism; yet inflation and high food prices threaten stability.
Christ our Lord calls all who love him to earnestly repent of their sin
and live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin to
God and be at peace within ourselves. Then we can truly worship in word
and song. |

Open to me the gates of righteousness, that
I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate
of the Lord; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you
have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the
builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord's
doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has
made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. O give thanks to the Lord for
the Lord’s goodness, for a steadfast love that endures forever. |

Prayer for Peace by L. Dean Carper,
Shenandoah, Iowa |

Dear Lord:
We ask for peace, not as the world knows peace, but for that feeling of
calmness that is always present through your Son, Jesus Christ. For it
is the fear within that we need to overcome in order to face the turmoil
without.
As we face the world with its hunger, wars and hatred, we seek your
assurance that all is well. We know that you are in command and the
purposes of this world are not necessarily yours. But because of our
humanness we have a tendency to fear that which we don't understand.
Grant us therefore that inward tranquility so that the fears of hatred
and injustices will be met with determination and an eye single to your
glory. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Great God of all peoples, we pray for divine forgiveness
when we have sinned. Please be near us as we strive to become the
persons you have created us to be. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for the grieving—those whose loved ones suffer and those who
walk with the pain and mystery of death. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for the people of Uruguay as they serve those who suffer. We
also pray for other nations who have felt the conquering sword and the
misery of war. May they find your peace. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
At this time we remember and pray for world concerns. Please give the
peacemakers of this world the strength and courage they need to overcome
the injustices they encounter and teach others of your peace. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We remember our own personal cares. Hear us, we ask, as we open our
contrite hearts and minds to your will. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
that you feel needs to be held up to God for prayerful consideration.
|
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We praise you for guidance and your love. We praise you for the gift of
peace through Christ Jesus. May his life be a part of our lives. To you,
Great God, we give the honor, and praise, and glory, forever and ever.
Amen. |

| Sending Forth |

We conclude our service for today with ministry of
music. We invite you to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or
meditate for as long as you may wish.
May the Prince of Peace guide your ways as you leave this time of
