Call to Prayer

We greet you in the name of God
who is our guide to peace. Each day in this sacred place, we pray to God
for peace in our world. In addition, each day we pray for a different
country.
Today we will hold up the people of Iceland in our prayers. Located in
Northern Europe, Iceland boasts the world's oldest functioning
legislative assembly, the Althing, established in 930. Independent for
over 300 years, Iceland was subsequently ruled by Norway and Denmark.
Limited home rule from Denmark was granted in 1874 and complete
independence attained in 1944. The only NATO nation with no military
forces, Iceland is one of several countries with a 100 percent literacy
rate and one of the longest life expectancies. Almost all of Iceland's
electricity and heating come from hydroelectric power and geothermal
water reserves. In recent years, Iceland's economy has looked shaky:
fishing quotas have been cut back, unemployment has risen and the króna
devalued. Clashes between environmental organizations and the Icelandic
whaling industry, which split from the International Whaling Commission
in 1992, also haven't helped matters.
Let us unite as one to pray for peace in our time and for our day. |

| Scripture Reading: Helaman 1:112, Book of Mormon |
| |
And it came to pass that there came a voice
unto them, yea, a pleasant voice, as if it were a whisper, saying,
“Peace, peace be unto you, because of your faith in my well beloved, who
was from the foundation of the world.” |

Prayer for Peace by Donald Brown, Pueblo,

Almighty God,
Give us strength and courage to stand up and be counted,
to stand up for all those around us who cannot stand up for themselves,
to stand up for justice, equality, and peace, in the face of prejudice,
scorn, and ridicule.
Give us strength and courage to fight against evil,
to struggle for all the powerless who may have no one to struggle for
them,
to struggle and fight for what we know is just and true and sacred,
to struggle against all those forces that would oppress and dehumanize
and exploit others.
Give us strength and courage to speak and act in your stead,
to speak for the innocent and defenseless, who cannot speak for
themselves,
to speak against cruelty, violence, intolerance, and hatred in all
forms,
to speak the truth in love, even when it comes at a cost.
Give us strength and courage to love unconditionally and fully,
to love all those we may find difficult to love,
to love those who may not even love us in return,
to love peace and righteousness, and to love nothing more than we love
you.
Give us strength and courage, to question and to seek,
to seek for solutions to the conflict and war that rages in so much of
the Earth,
to seek for peace, even when peace seems a distant and hopeless dream,
to seek no other peace than that peace which is yours, and make us its
instruments,
opening our eyes and our ears and our hearts,
giving us resolve and determination and commitment,
that we may see and understand and know, what work of peace we may do
for you.
In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
O God, our Creator, you are the way of peace. Come into
the brokenness of our lives and our land with your healing love. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Help us to be willing to bow before you in true repentance, and to bow
to one another in real forgiveness. By the fire of your Holy Spirit,
melt our hard hearts and consume the pride and prejudice which separate
us. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Fill us with your perfect love which casts out fear, and bind us
together in unity. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We pray for all ecumenical initiatives and all occasions which bring
together the faithful Christians of different traditions. We remember
the people of Iceland. May they learn of peace and share it with the
world. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
We thank you and praise you for love that sustains us, for wisdom that
directs us, and for desire that beckons us toward peace in our world. |
| The People Pray in Silence |
| |
Please use this space to pray for any
current concern or event in our community, city, state, nation or world
