[1141] April 1, 1976 Ordination of Women
Whereas, Resolution 564, adopted April 18, 1905, is no longer responsive to the needs of the church; and
Whereas, A limited number of recommendations for women to be ordained to the priesthood have been submitted through administrative channels; and
Whereas, We are restricted from processing these under the provisions of Resolution 564 arrived at by common consent; and
Whereas, After research, consultation, and prayerful consideration of many factors, we find no ultimate theological reason why women, if it were thought wise to do so, could not hold priesthood; and
Whereas, Acceptability by those to whom ministry is offered is a significant factor and to some extent would be determined by existing cultural and sociological conditions; therefore, be it
Resolved, That Resolution 564 be rescinded; and be it further
Resolved, That consideration of the ordination of women be deferred until it appears in the judgment of the First Presidency that the church, by common consent, is ready to accept such ministry.
(The Conference ordered an explanatory letter of the First Presidency to be published, and this was printed on pages 265-266 of the 1976 Conference Bulletin.)
Superseded by WCR 1189 in 1986
