April 22, 1966 Peace, War, and the Use of Force

Whereas, The World Conference of 1958 resolved that a committee be appointed by the First Presidency to study, review, and prepare a statement on peace, war, and the use of force (General Conference Bulletin for October 10, 1958, page 93, and October 12, 1958, page 104), and

Whereas, a report of such committee described as an interim and not a final report was adopted in 1960 (GCR 1020 Bulletin for April 3, 1960, page 53, and April 8, 1960, page 97) which report recommended the extension of the life of the committee to permit extended studies of such matters, and

Whereas, There have been no further interim or final reports submitted by such a committee, and

Whereas, Pending resolutions before the Conference on the subject of peace, war, and use of force reflect the concern of many members that further statements on these issues be considered, therefore, be it

Resolved, That this World Conference reaffirms its concern and intent that further reports of a committee on peace, war, and the use of force be prepared and hereby refers all pending resolutions on such subjects, including the resolutions labeled, "Peace, War, and the Use of Force" (Center Stake), "World Leaders and Peace" (Blue Valley Stake), and "War and Pacifism" (London, Ontario, District) to such committee for its consideration. April 22, 1966 Utilization of Retired Members

Whereas, The increasing longevity of life combined with an earlier age of retirement has released substantial numbers of church members from employment responsibilities; and

Whereas, Such retired members may make valuable contributions to the work of Christ both in their areas of residence and other areas to which they might be assigned; therefore, be it

Resolved, That this Conference looks with favor upon an investigation by the First Presidency of additional methods of making maximum utilization of the talents and time of such retired members.

April 23, 1966 World Conference Role in Statements of Policy

Whereas, The World Conference has historically adopted statements of policy concerning issues affecting the church (see, for example, GCR 1020 on War and Peace [sic], and GCR 995 on Racial Equality [sic], and GCR 1045 calling for World Conference-approved statements of principle on matters of current social concern),

Whereas, It is desirable to clarify the function of the World Conference with respect to the initiation and adoption of such policy statements and to facilitate the preparation of such legislation if such function is to continue,

Resolved, That the Conference request the Committee on Conference Organization and Procedures to study and report to the next Conference regarding the proper role of the World Conference with respect to such statements of policy and to study and recommend methods of implementation, including the desirability of Standing Committees of the Conference on various subjects such as social concerns and peace, war, and the use of force.
