The delegation arrived in Afghanistan on June 16 and started on a busy
itinerary. Kathy described the first two days of her trip as an
emotional rollercoaster. As her plane landed at the Kabul airport she
was disturbed by the amount of shattered aircraft parts, remnants of 20
years worth of war, scattered across the airfield. She has also
observed a significant amount of destruction in Kabul and the surrounding
area where entire neighborhoods and villages have been obliterated.
However, Kathy indicated that the Afghan people have been more warm and
welcoming than she could have imagined. She is also impressed by the
beauty of the lush countryside, surrounded by magnificent snowcapped
mountains. After visiting a bazaar, she has augmented her wardrobe
with the style of clothing worn by Afghan women.
The delegation has already visited a demining site at Halo Trust and met with
Islamic Relief, a faith-based humanitarian aid agency. They are also
planning a culturally appropriate memorial service to be held in Kabul on
Friday for all victims of violence.
